Re: Water bottles and camelpacs

I always wear a pack. We usually march in white shirt & tie with a gray vest- I find that the straps and pack itself blend-in to the vest well enough, (my pack is black and gray,) that it's hardly...

Re: Practice Chanter Recommendations

It may not work for you, but in a similar situation I once established a habit of building a little, "booth," out of couch cushions on the kitchen table. Then I could lean-in to the, "booth," and...

Re: The end of the world as we know it...really?

Utah, not the place that first comes to mind when thinking of bagpipes, boasts two High School pipe bands, a university pipe band, four competing pipe bands, (some of which have competition groups at...

Re: Surefire Synthetic chanter reed

I posted about mine not long ago: I like it for playing on my own, but it's a chore to get set-up, (initial tuning, I mean). Once it's there, it stays, but for me personally: I wouldn't want them for...

Cross-Fingering, finally found a way to make it work

I've always enjoyed playing tunes with a, "C natural," and other accidentals, but I've never been able to get cross-fingering to work.

*not never: I live in a high-mountain desert region, I think...

Re: Do you ever take your students on gigs?

I took a student along for a birthday performance and twice for funerals. The birthday performance was low-key and low-pay, so I wasn't worried about anything being, "messed-up".

One funeral, the...

Re: Notes in Music?

A good place to start, friend, might be, "bending," notes by sliding your fingers across the holes.

Example: Pumpkin's Fancy

Vibrato can also be achieved by wavering fingers over holes that...

Re: Flapper hinge...up or down?

I've found I often end up somewhere closer to half-way to 6:00. Every flapper seems to have it's own ideas about when it's going to open and close, and by the time I find the right balance of height,...

Re: adjusting chanter tuning with hemp

I don't know... The picture isn't super clear, but I thought it looked like it was covering a couple holes...

That said, I I'd bet there is a crack(s) - that just seems like too strange and...

Re: retrospective apology?

If it were me, I might offer a small discount if they want me to come back for the same event in 2020.

But don't feel bad- these things happen to all of us.

Re: Busking on Pipes

I've had only positive experiences busking in Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, and New Jersey. Though I usually get a positive reaction from smallpipes, GHB tends to be the crowd pleaser.

Years ago...

Re: Interest in a comprehensive piping wiki?

I would enjoy perusing such a thing, and if I could ever help by contributing I'd enjoy doing so.

I'm in no position to help get such a thing started... But if someone else does it- I'll cheer...

Re: Tin Whistle to Play With GHB

You might also think about some smallpipes in D. Then your buddy could get a standard D whistle or low-D whistle. You'd be in tune with each other, plus you'd be playing at a similar volume level......

Re: Piping Books

I really enjoyed, "Wayfaring Strangers," by Ritchie & Orr.

It's not bagpipe-specific, but it's a great read, treating, (basically,) the transatlantic journey of music from the British isles to the...

Re: Heat threshold for ABW Pipes?

I've been on some Booth ABWs for 15 years now, and I bought them used. I've had them in temperatures over 100 and below freezing, no cracks yet, (knock on blackwood,) but I do recommend you get some...

Terry Tully's Pumpkin's Fancy

Hey friends,

I've been combing the forum and the rest of the internets, but I'm not finding something definitive:

Is, "Pumpkin's Fancy," a Terry Tully original, or is it an older tune he...
