Re: Irish Funeral

For sure on the Highland pipes, that tune and many others (including Scotland The Brave, I might point out) can't be played with all the correct notes in their correct octave.

It's why I try to...

strange Frankenpipes on Ebay

Well I guess "strange Frankenpipes" is redundant, but have you seen anything like this?

Re: Scottish Smallpipes - New Reeds for an Old Set

Sort of odd-looking drone ends there, I'm sure somebody will be able to identify the maker.

When I saw the thread title mentioning "Old Set" I got all excited, hoping I might find a fellow...

I wish my pipes sounded that "decent"!

Re: Piobaireachd

Sorry my bad, in most dialects voiced stops are devoiced in word-medial and word-final position

D > T
G > K
B > P

while devoiced stops are pre-aspirated

T > hT
K > hK

Re: Kilt Sizing

For sure it's an estimate. But it's based on simple math, that the kilt has one layer across your backside but is doubled across the front.

It's handy because it's easy to explain and easy to...

Re: Piobaireachd

Yes that's ridiculous.

I just added the comment that the Anglicised forms like "Pibrock" etc are much closer than that video.

The -chd ending would be tricky
1) if you didn't know that the...

Re: Kilt Sizing

I feel it's easier, looks better, and it's cheaper to move the buckles, than to purchase newfangled contraptions.

Kiltmakers and regimental tailors have been moving buckles for over 200 years....

Re: Kilt Sizing

Yes unless it had complex alterations by a kilt maker it was originally built to be around a 35 inch waist.

It's super-easy to mover the buckles (not the straps) on the wearer's right: each...

Re: Kilt Sizing

It's common with vintage kilts, especially hire and band kilts, for the kilt to have been altered at some point to fit a different waist size and/or length than the kilt was originally designed for. ...

Re: Does different price mean different quality?

Well it depends on what you mean by "early".

We have plenty of recordings of Highland pipers from 100 years ago.

I only have a few tracks of these on CD. The ones I have show well-tuned...

Re: Taps on pipes?

My old Pipe Major had a large repertoire of Baroque etc tunes that he could play when needed, including an endless number of hymns, and quite a few Baroque trumpet tunes, and organ tunes.

Re: OK, Who Knew?

Though an American I have no idea who that guy is, and I couldn't care less.

There are probably very few public figures/celebrities that I would recognize on sight.

Re: "Outlander Tunes"

I just want to point out that Eric Rigler is the piper, on Highland pipes, uilleann pipes, and Scottish smallpipes and that the use of all three of these instruments is quite authentic to 18th...

Re: SSP Drones

As I understand it (I'm no pipemaker) that if you used a bigger bore on the bass, to get more volume, the drone would have to be rather longer.

So maybe it's a space-saving thing, having the...

Re: Hardie Infinity chanters

I think it's safe to say that there's at least as much variability with Low D's low-hand spacing as GHB low-hand spacing, from make to make.

And wildly irregular spacing, some whistles having the...

Re: Does different price mean different quality?

Yes that's what I've been doing for a few years now and I really like it that way.

I have a 1940s Starck set at B-flat/466 and a 1940s Lawrie set at 484. Both sets are going great, and at gigs I...

Re: Does different price mean different quality?

Now that I've been playing over 30 years I've gone the anti-bling route.

I've owned silver & ivory pipes and pipes with fancy engraving but now plain nickel ferrules and plain wood projecting...

Re: Band reeds - what do you use?

We go local, and get the reeds for our McCallum chanters from Steve Megarity.

Then we know the reeds will work in our weather.

Re: Hardie Infinity chanters

The thing about taking a photo comparing fingerhole spacing is what hole do you use as the benchmark, the place from which to gauge the other hole's spacing.

So in Patrick's photo above the...

Re: OK, Who Knew?

I think his posture is OK (his shoulders and head are straight etc) but the position of the pipes is odd: the bag is very low, not up in the arm-pit.

Suit jackets vary greatly in the shape of the...

Re: Taps on pipes?

Interesting, I've played hundreds of military funerals and I've never seen a Ceremonial Bugle malfunction. I've talked to the soldiers and they tell me that they put in new batteries for each service...

Re: Taps on pipes?

I can understand this feeling. It comes from a legitimate place: Taps was composed specifically for the bugle, and on any other instrument sounds out-of-place.

Reminds me of when, years ago, I got...

Re: New video/exercise sheet for learning Heavy D throws

I was taught to play a grip (leumluath) on C, then raise the lower-hand index finger to get D. I think that's what many pipers are actually doing, though they might not be conceptualizing it in that...

Re: Any Key of A practice chanters aside from the ES Chanter?

Most long PCs are around halfway between 440 and 466, in the 450s. (We have several different makes in our band with several different makes of reed and they pitch right around there.)

Like...
