Re: First time jitters

I always have a spare played-in chanter reed and a played-in set of back-up drone reeds on my person any time I play, and swap reeds in and out as I practice so I know my back-up systems will work if...

Re: Advice Needed - Replacement stocks

Last year I bought a set of poly stocks for a spare bag I keep for emergencies. $121.01 from Ayrshire bagpipes. They have several styles, including the combed and beaded, nickel ferrules that look...

Re: Origin of 'The Keel Row'?

As I recall being told a lifetime ago, the lyrics referred to the final parting of two rebels- one was being hanged( The High Road?) and the other being banished/transported. That may indeed be an...

Re: First time jitters

A hot foyer only added to your nervousness, as well as drying you (and your reed) out.

Keep practicing and work up your stamina as well as your ability. Remember one who has never failed can...

Re: Origin of 'The Keel Row'?

Think of High Road as meaning the main/ good/ well-maintained road or what we'd call a Highway over here. A lot of towns & cities name their main road through town "High Street" for the same reason...

Re: Irish Funeral

If you learn to "Pinch" a high B, you can actually play Auld Land Syne (and God Bless America and a lot of other tunes) properly.

While we're on that- one thing that drives other musicians...

Re: Irish Funeral

re: Danny Boy: I am not happy playing it on Highland pipes. Yes it can almost be played, but taking the high note(s) down an octave robs the melody of its dramatic climax. I'm also a lyric tenor (...

Re: Irish Funeral

Here's what I usually play for Irish Funerals:

Oft In The Stilly Night, She Moved Through The Fair, The Minstrel Boy (Slow, not peppy) Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore; For Ireland, I'll Not Tell Her...

Re: Canmore Hybrid bags

The stories of Canmore bags falling apart probably refer to the earlier GoreTex® bags. I had two. The first, of the first model, started leaking in the throat area after a number of years (6?). I...

Re: The Art of the 6/8 March

I'd take that as counting the eighth notes with a pick up to ONE and to the Second beat (4th eighth note). Whatever works to get it rolling, IMHO.

Re: Opinion on '90s(?) Hardies?

There are several good pipe makers in Maine: Nate Banton, Chris Pinchbeck, Mike Dow, Bruce Childress… the Gibson shop is in NH and Michael MacHarg is in So. Royalton, VT ( I know I'm forgetting some.)

Re: The Art of the 6/8 March

Another way to look at compound time such as 6/8, (or 6/4), 9/8, 12/8, etc. in comparison to duple time is that the beats don't divide straight up-and down in compound time as they do in Duple time. ...

Re: Opinion on '90s(?) Hardies?

First , as I recall, there were the Ross Champions which had plastic bodies and plastic-impregnated cane tongues, then came the first Shepherd synthetic reeds, and then the Wygents which were...

Re: The Art of the 6/8 March

I love 6/8s. They Swing! I've written several myself and would much rather march to 6/8s than to 2/4s most of the time. The last time I played in the NYC Tartan Day Parade it was pishing rain that...

Re: Exceptional everything

I often play that tune, AKA "This Old Man" when there are little kids at an event, because it gives them something familiar to make the big loud instrument less scary.

Re: Skye Boat Song- Scots Guards Error?

It was not originally composed as a bagpipe tune, and as an adaptation from a 19th century song, it's no surprise there are various versions.

Supposedly, the air was collected by Anne Campbelle...

Re: military etiquette?

Thanks, Ben. One other exception I've seen is at veterans' funerals, when the Honor Guard presents the folded flag to the family and salutes. Would it be because he's (she's) saluting the flag...
