Re: How Can You Tell Which McCallum Chanter You Have?

I count the flanges on the bottom of the chanter, 3 flanges mark III, one flange mark I etc., but I could be dead wrong about this method. And there are newer chanters that don't fit this at all....

Re: head shakers

My band was walking up to a parade start point when a drunk lying in the gutter said "You gotta stop wearing them dresses and get right with God". We got a kick out of that.

Re: Taps on pipes?

I played it when the Marine bugler informed me his battery was dead. He asked if I knew Taps. I played it. It was fine, no complaints or rude remarks, just satisfied people.

Re: Bass drum head materials...

Really enjoyable vid!
Reminds me of Marine Corp Band BD sound, like a small caliber cannon being fired every time he hits the drum. All he needs is a wooden mallet. A no nonsense style of...

Re: I made my own pipe bag

Wow! You don't want to 'hide' it with a bag cover, it'd be like covering a great tat with boring clothes.

Re: Playing "Taps"

I've many times heard two bugles play 'echo Taps'...and the last phrase is repeated (echoed)...in a dreamy state that could pass as the way it should be always.

Re: Best Repair/Restore USA?

Tanx folks...

El G, I don't know how to repair hairline cracks or true bores but if I did I'd fix mine and anyone else who needed it. I like the idea though, just not tooled up for it.

Re: MacDougalls?

Good news.
He's decided to send them to Naill in Minehead for the restoration. He's very keen to start lessons. He's just turned 50... As a side, the Pipes do have brass lined drones.

Re: MacDougalls?

They don't seem to be in need of drastic repair, really from what could tell they are in pretty good shape. I suspect they would play fine with a new bag, chanter and reeds and not much else. ...

Re: Goat skin bags Vs sheepskin bags

I just tied in a Bennett Goat bag a month or so ago. It's the nicest leather I've ever seen. It's very thick and has absorbed a lot of seasoning. It's stiff when new and takes awhile to break in,...
