Re: 2019 Pipers Gathering in Litchfield, CT

Just completed my registration. Looking forward to a great experience. Need someone to help me with my transition from SSPs to a set of Border Pipes I got recently from Australia.

Re: E note flat on Border Chanter

Thanks again Patrick and Callum for your good questions and suggestions. Yes, the reed does look very closed to my uneducated eye. But I'm going to leave that to John Eliott of Sound Supreme when I...

Re: E note flat on Border Chanter

Thanks for the help. The As are up at 450. Tried to hemp the reed to pull it out a bit, but not having much luck. I think I'll wait for the new reeds. Getting them from reed maker John Eliott here in...

Re: E note flat on Border Chanter

Hi Patrick. No, it's cane. But it might need replacing. The gap between the blades is only about half as wide as on my smallpipe reed. Getting new chanter reeds next week. BTW the F note is also flat...

E note flat on Border Chanter

I've just started on a set of Border Pipes, transitioning from Smallpipes, without ever having played the GHPs. I'm working on the accuracy of finger positions and the more sensitive bag pressure for...

Session In Toronto

We're starting up a regular session at a Scottish pub in Toronto, Ontario. Anybody interested?

Re: Playing G major tunes on the smallpipes

Thanks for the information (and links) folks. Haven't figured out a way to get a G to sound on any configuration of my (three) drones/reeds setup. I may wait on this until I'm ready in the future to...

Playing G major tunes on the smallpipes

Don't have a C natural hole on the back of my chanter, but I can usually substitute a B natural for the C sharps. But what about the drones? The AE combination sounds really bad as does the AD.

Gordon Mooney's Pipers' Rendezvous

Just got back from a great weekend of piping in the Quebec mountains. Good instruction, eager students, vast array of pipes, fiddles, whistles and other instruments, and a beautiful location. (Tried...

Re: The Ale is Dear. What drones?

Thanks Tim. I just registered for Gordon Mooney's "Piper's Rendezvous" in Quebec. I look forward to discussing these matters with you in October. Mike.

Re: Middle drone SSP in A

Just an update on tuning the baritone drone from E to D on my SSP in A. As Dan Bell and others suggested, adjusting the reed bridle was all that was needed. An email exchange with the maker...

Re: The Ale is Dear. What drones?

Kevin: I hadn't thought about playing the tune in A. Would be a great solution if as you say I could get a C natural on my chanter.

Re: The Ale is Dear. What drones?

Thanks Patrick. Your tunes sound great. I think I am doing what you have done for B minor tunes. Retuned my A tenor to a B. Left the baritone on an E. (I don't play the bass drone yet.) But I didn't...

Re: The Ale is Dear. What drones?

I understand and appreciate the comments from those who recommend sticking with the A and E drones. My teacher, who is a GHBer, also doesn't seem to mind the disonances I hear with the B minor tune....

Re: The Ale is Dear. What drones?

Thanks to all. I changed the A tenor to a B (up in pitch, down in length) and left the baritone at E. I haven't graduated to the full three drones yet. It sounds good, but not as good as Peter...

The Ale is Dear. What drones?

I'm learning the Ale is Dear, which is high on people's lists of small pipes tunes. With all the Bs, the tune has to be in the key of B minor, right? But I cannot get good harmonies with any...

Re: Bellows stiff

I also have a new set of McCallum SSPs, which are great. The bellows do not close by themselves, and it was tricky getting a case that accommodated the big, open bellows plus the pipes. As for...

Re: Border pipes down an octave?

I found this 2014 post here by Calecm in California about the finger spread on his Swayne Low D Border Pipes:

"Somebody mentioned earlier about the finger spread. This chanter actually came with a...

Re: Border pipes down an octave?

Thanks to all for the input.

I'll look into the Swayne border chanters in different keys. I like the louder sound and the extended range of the conical bore as well as the ability to cross finger...

Border pipes down an octave?

I am playing a very nice set of smallpipes in A. Though I really like the warm tone of the cylindrical bore chanter, it would be great to get the C and F natural and the G sharp like you can on the...
