Re: Chanter ID

I play one from 1930. The stamp in ReGaL - for R. G. Lawrie. It is best with a John Walsh reed. Lots of new chanters sound a lot worse.
Yours is more modern. On mine the top part is all one piece...

Re: Tune Identification - Dysart and Dundonald Band

The tune they played marching into the courtyard and forming up I played in the 1980s - a four part 4/4 called "Nameless". I think they played three parts. It comes to mind occasionally and I can...

Re: Takeaway tips from botched gigs?

I was once hired to do an 11 o'clock wedding on a Saturday wedding at a church new to me. I arrived at 10:35 and got the pipes out when suddenly the doors opened and the bride & groom started out. I...

Re: "B" Flat Set up

My band also plays Gandy chanters, Will. With good solid reeds the top hand at 480 - 482 is not thin, but full and powerful. It is because today's reed makers produce a product far superior, IMHO,...

Re: Bit of a 'crack' problem needing some advice please

1. Send it away to have it glued and whipped, or
2. send it away to be glued, bored out slightly and a plastic sleeve installed.

I would do the second. In fact some makers do that for their...

Re: Aluminum ring on Chanter?

I still have a pc, made of rosewood or something like and with an aluminium sole, which I bought in a shop in England in 1956. It came with fingering instruction, and cost but a few shillings...

Wygent drone reeds

My band went to a Bflat chanter for parade season. Not wanting to mess with my painstakingly set tenor drone reeds for playing at 480, I dug up a pair of Wygents from the bin, and set them up for 466...

Re: Picking the right reed

I see that Patrick lists Gilmour as one of his preferred reeds. FWIW I have played easy/medium Gilmours for years and have usually damaged them somehow before they gave out. I've been playing one in...

Re: Hair sporran length

The rule as far as I ever heard was a finger's width below the bottom edge. But can one get hair sporrans in short, medium and long lengths to fit the wearers?

Re: Poly VS ABW stocks

Dave Atherton, who makes some of the finest pipes available today usually does them with a poly blowstick stock, but of course that is not the same thing as a drone stock re tone. But the poly stock ...

Re: Molded reeds going the way of the Dodo?

There's a Caldwell ridge cut in my band chanter, a Gandy McCallum, which has been going for nearly 2 years and still is loud and bright at 480. I've had a molded Gilmour in my other set in a Dunbar...

Re: Drone Reed Issues & Advice sort.

Don't want to hijack, but the thread seems to have meandered to where I can chime in

My band pipes are J&R Glen repros. I recently got a set of Selbies for them, and find that the sound is very...

Re: Flapper hinge...up or down?

If you use a cup to attach the tube to the base of the drone stock you can have a Trap Dri AND Moose valve. I am a fairly wet blower and do it this way with success. The cup never slips, but very...

Re: Want Estimated Value on a Set of Pipe

And never mind the silver, Robertson was one of the finest pipe makers ever. Even all blackwood sets fetch $3,000,00 USD or more. Jim McGilivray says that he has never come across a bad set of...

Re: Polyester thread instead of hemp = game changer!

Me too for waxed dental floss - but on the blowsticks and chanters only. No downside that I've found. It's been on one of my chanters for over 20 years, though I wasn't playing it for a 10 ten year...

Re: Photo: what bands?

It looks like it is the Easter parade along Kingston Road in Toronto. I've done that one in cold and drizzle and in summer-like heat. Isle of Skye was worn by the Blackwater Pipe Band back 20 years...

Re: Side Zipper

I've never noticed a problem. If one came up, I'd slip a piece of thin packing foam in to cover the zipper.

Re: Bagpipes for wet conditions

And carry some long Q tips, a pull through (piece of cloth tied on a string with a nail as a weight) and a dry cloth all in a zip lock bag.

Re: Orig or restored?

I played a set of ca 1900 ebony Centers for 20 years. Every piece of wood but one had one or more cracks, though none went through. I finally sent them away to be restored. The nickel rings came back...

Re: Opinion on '90s(?) Hardies?

I had a set of early '90s Hardies. The bass drone was almost impossible to reed, and was susceptible to motorboating. Of course the reed choices were cane and then then the first synthetic reed -...
