Re: Cow or Sheep?

I always played a Begg sheepskin before I switched over to their cowhide. One of the great things is that the size I was using before "standard sized swan neck" was the exact same in the cow so...

Re: Cow or Sheep?

I'm playing a Begg cowhide bag and I find a tube trap with a trap dri device works very well. I would recommend that set up. I'm a normal blower, not too wet and definitely not dry.

Re: Chanter pitch and reed question

Modern reeds can vary a lot, but most reedmakers today are trying to make consistent reeds. So yes, some can be quite a bit flatter or sharper than others depending on the design the reedmaker...

Re: G1 reeds in Shepherd chanter

Different reed seats, different throat, it reeds up much different than a Shepherd and of course the obvious much higher pitch as you mentioned. I just don't see any similarity between them. They are...

Re: G1 reeds in Shepherd chanter

Hi Calum, not trying to argue, but I respectfully disagree. I don't find these two chanters to be the same at all. At least not with the examples I have on hand.

Re: Transition to the Worlds

You can expect to readjust all of your reeds in the reed seats of your chanters as you'll be playing at a lower altitude for one. The humidity may cause some issues with your reeds as well since...

Re: need to identify this pc reed

I agree 100%. I've seen many of these and they are made in Pakistan. Never seen a name brand reed with this look.

That said, some can be very nice sounding and work well. Not most though.

Re: fingers moving out of position (foul noise)

Your hands could be cramping or you may be gripping the chanter too hard. Both of these can cause your hands to not fall into the right position while playing. Try to relax your hands as much as you...

Re: Your Experience with Acetyl (Plastic) Highland Bagpipes

It did get smaller. It was a very long time ago so hard to remember all the details. The thing I took away from the experiment was that yes 100% plastic moves more than wood.

Re: Most comfortable chanter you've played?

100% Kyo for this imo. The Kyo has about the most even and shortest spacing of any chanter that I have in my collection. Most people with smaller hands find they can play the Kyo with ease compared...

Re: Your Experience with Acetyl (Plastic) Highland Bagpipes

Years ago I was up at Jerry Gibsons' shop in Cleveland and we were discussing the topic of plastic vs wood in regard to expansion.

For those that don't know Jerry was a mechanical engineer by...

Re: Most comfortable chanter you've played?

I have a lot of chanters. Some are indeed more restrictive feeling than others. It's very minor but there. Same reed in different chanters.

I'm going to have to try a manometer test to see if...

Re: Teenage Students size bag?

The Canmore Hybrid in extended small would probably be perfect and they're a good value.

Re: Most comfortable chanter you've played?

One great advantage to being a reedmaker is having to own all the chanters on the market for "testing" reasons

I've played Naill for a very long time. My pc is also a long Naill so the...

Re: Flat F question.

In my experience there are two main things that cause the dreaded double toning F. Mouth too open or the blades are too long.

You said squeezing it shut helps. Chances are it will always tend to...

Re: Yanny or Laurel?

There are two different audio clips making the rounds out there in internet land. One says Laurel (the one above) and there is another that clearly says Yanny in a higher pitched tone.

Re: Reeding a new Naill chanter

The Lee/Naill revision happened back in 2005 if I'm not mistaken. The way you can easily identify which chanter you have is by the reed seat. The Lee/Naill chanters all have threaded reed seats, the...

Re: Well-known pipers who play easy reeds?

I didn't want to get into this because I personally have no idea what other reedmakers do when they are picking out reeds. Regarding myself I can assure you that every reed I send out has my stamp of...

Re: Unpleasant buzz on C

I'm betting it's the cracks in the reed blades. If the cracks are anywhere near the middle section of the blades (not just the very corners) this is definitely going to cause issues. Reeds vibrate...
