Re: Bagad Men Ta Han-Rohan

I don't know anything about the piece of music in question, but it's a Breton bagad, from Brittany, France. There is a paragraph about it here: https://indieethos.wordpress.com/tag/bagad-men-ha-tan/

Re: Archy J, India’s 1st Pro Female Bagpiper

I'm genuinely impressed that you can manage to hold two opposing opinions like this in a single sentence. Incredible mental flexibility there.

Re: Knowing when a hide bag is done

My understanding was that goat had the advantages of sheepskin combined with significantly longer durability. I've had a goat on once but that lasted two years without issue, though that said I've...

Re: Archy J, India’s 1st Pro Female Bagpiper

As usual the misogyny is causing ripples beneath the surface.

It's difficult to tell what exactly it is about Archy that causes a certain type of person, often a Facebooker, to break out in...

Re: Loose chrome mount

I would generally not bother with glue, and simply use a couple of turns of hemp to get it tight enough to stay in place.

Re: Pipers in The Royal Tank Corps

It's Royal Tank Regiment, not Corps, which may aid googling.

Yes, they have a band, and have done for a long time. I am not sure how large it is or on what basis it operates these days but it...

Re: Time to boycott the Worlds?

While I think the RSPBA do themselves no favours with lack of transparency, and this whole business could most certainly have been better managed, I think this is all getting just a bit over-heated....

Re: Funeral piping for presidents and prime ministers

I think that Churchill's coffin was piped from St Paul's to where it was embarked at Tower Bridge, but I can't find any detail on it.

Re: Did "Scotland the Brave" originate with "O'Donnell Abu"?

There's certainly a more than passing similarity in certain phrases. We discussed it recently here, though I can't find it. Basically, it seems to have existed as a recognisable tune for some time...

Monthly Composition Thread - Jan 2020

It's the return of the monthly composition thread! The same deal as last time: have a go at composing something based on this prompt and submit it for (constructive) criticism.

Maybe it...

Re: Why Don't Drummers March in Solos?

Performance practice. Meaning, there is no good reason orchestras wear black bowties, bands wear ghillie brogues, rock bands sling their guitars low down, other than tradition, which may or may not...

Re: Tune from Outlander

If anyone can isolate a clip that would be helpful. However, it is worth saying that much music for these kinds of productions is written specifically for the show with the express intention of...

Re: Bagpipes in a silent decline?

Bear in mind this article is a leader based on a press release from a charity that does (very good) work to get piping and drumming into state schools, which have historically never been bastions of...

Re: Drilling C Nat Hole?

Crossfingering (in terms of bore physics) arises from a physical process - specifically, the air in the hole being too massive for the sound wave to drive it, so the wave terminates further down the...

Re: Ever found piping imagery at memorial park?

The quickest way of doing it is to upload them to something like Imgur and just pop a link here - less fiddling than trying to resize images to fit and then hotlinking them.

Re: Monthly composition thread

Interesting you say that, Richard - I deliberately chose a theme that sounds "familiar", though I don't *think* I've actually copied it from something that exists.

Interesting as well that yours...

Re: Former PM charged with child porn (Calif.)

An immensely difficult topic Michael. While we have the benefit of your expertise on the thread, it would be remiss of us not to ask if there are any simple steps or processes that bands or teachers...

Bob, once you have posted the image to Imgur, you need to get the address of the image itself - you might be able to right click and find an option to "copy image URL", or you might have to select...

Monthly composition thread

Following on from the discussions about activity levels, I thought one thing that might be useful is regular threads on a particular topic that everyone can get involved in, if they wish.

Re: Drilling C Nat Hole?

One option is to spend some time learning to half-hole a C natural. I can now do it pretty consistently in something like 72nds Farewell to Aberdeen. Still working on the Dirty Bee, right enough...

Re: Am I really expected to play double D-gracenotes on certain triplets in jigs?

Being right-handed means that your right hand is better at making gross motor movements, controlled by the arm - throwing a ball, writing with a pen, stirring a pot.

Your left hand is better at...

Re: Am I really expected to play double d-gracenotes on certain triplets in jigs?

Just to be clear, the movements under discussion here are neither mistakes nor archaic.

Re: Am I really expected to play double d-gracenotes on certain triplets in jigs?

People do not write down music that can't be played. What is happening is that your fingers are giving you information that you should consider, and that information is that you should slow down. ...

Re: Memorization techniques?

I strongly recommend translating tunes into the Nether Lorn canntaireachd (do it yourself, don't copy it from somewhere else) and learn it in vocable form, including singing.
