Re: A female Italian Zampogna player, Maria Varali

Yes, I've actually heard of this instrument before. It was first the Wikipedia article about the Zampogna (in serious need of expatiation by the way) that introduced me to it, followed later by my...

Re: A female Italian Zampogna player, Maria Varali

Thanks. From this, I can understand what Maria's getting across to us. My guess is that this is basically how other women feel about playing bagpipes of any kind...
I couldn't have understood it...

Re: A female Italian Zampogna player, Maria Varali

If I may, I'm wondering what other people thought of the modern Zampogna quartet arrangements? What about the video clip of Maria Varali playing? Someone told me that Maria Varali speaks English! Any...

Re: Old piping records on my YouTube channel

Hey y'all,
So, within the last year or so, I have discovered this software that will make these records much easier to listen to. Combine this with my ability to correct warping, EQ'ing the...

Re: videos that give you chills

This man's fingering reminds me of the trills of the great Cecilia Bartoli or Joyce DiDonato! (amazing opera singers). Particularly the Bulgarian music. And the late Bella Silverman, though her...

I should also amend that Nicola is a man, not a woman. It may sound a bit strange to hear of a male name ending in A in Italy, but Nicola is Nicholas / Nick, although for females it means Nicole.

Re: A female Italian Zampogna player, Maria Varali

Pipers / Zampognari:
Here's another fluent English-speaking zampogna player you can feel free to contact. He is most known as an ethomusicologist who recorded countless CD's of zampogna music, as...

Re: A female Italian Zampogna player, Maria Varali

Yeah I wanted to keep it mostly piping-related, which is why I suggested PM's when it comes to vibrato. I knew it would get way too off-topic if this vibrato thing were posted right here, hence the...

Re: A female Italian Zampogna player, Maria Varali

@Paul: Sorry man, I personally like being very vivid myself. For me, being concise means that people will have a mountain of questions to ask, and I don't like that.
But, you won't believe this. One...

Re: A female Italian Zampogna player, Maria Varali

Klondike: A female tuba player and a male piccolo player? I never imagined that, but to me, that seems to be more scary than a female Zampognara (Maria) and a male Ciaramellaro (brother Luigi). I...

A female Italian Zampogna player, Maria Varali

Here's the one and only available Youtube of the first, if not one of very few female Italian Zampogna players, the young Maria Varali. She is playing the modernized tenor Zampogna in the key of G...

Re: My personal experience with Blackwood pipes (had no choice but to attach it)

Ok, so I finally figured out the culprit why my pipes have almost no bass presence whatsoever. Problem is, the mid section of the bass, starting at the top where the tuning pin is, it starts out...

Re: My personal experience with Blackwood pipes (had no choice but to attach it)

Well, now looking back on when I got these wooden pipes, I must confess that working with these is an absolute nightmare. I can never ever keep the hemping the same, i.e. every single time I play I...

Re: My personal experience with Blackwood pipes (had no choice but to attach it)

@moderntraditional: Here are two more amazing singers you don't realize you're missing. I swear these two have good vibratos. Problem is, why aren't they mentioned in opera like the unknowingly...

Re: Zampogna: The Forastiero Brothers

Ok, so I have a question for all of the Zampogna players here on the forums: Have you ever seen this Zampogna film? I think you can buy it from their website and it comes with a CD of the Forastiero...

Re: My personal experience with Blackwood pipes (had no choice but to attach it)

Well back to pipes: I think that slowing (worsening) vibrato as singers age might somehow tie to drone dominance in sets of pipes. Just as I prefer fast vocal vibrato, I prefer bass dominant drones....

Re: My personal experience with Blackwood pipes (had no choice but to attach it)

Well, in her early years however, her vibrato was good. @ModernTraditional you could have picked an EARLY recording of hers. For most singers, vibrato gets worse as they age (slower). So next time...

Re: My personal experience with Blackwood pipes (had no choice but to attach it)

Ok let me amend that: Why is this that so many opera singers, including this lady, sound like a siren? Almost every professional opera singer has slow vibrato and WE WANT THAT TO STOP! The trick:...

Re: My personal experience with Blackwood pipes (had no choice but to attach it)

Excuse me? I disagree. To me, her vibrato is too slow. Again, why do people accept slow vibrato as how it supposed to sound? And nobody realized how much opera has seriously declined over the...

Re: My personal experience with Blackwood pipes (had no choice but to attach it)

I need to clarify something here. This whole story was written on the exact day I got the pipes. So if you saw I said "Yesterday", instead of "the day before", that is my mistake. Sorry in advance.

Re: My personal experience with Blackwood pipes (had no choice but to attach it)

Wait... I'd take that back. Mirella has a vibrato that is, well, at least tolerable to be frank. Bit slow for my taste, but in her early years she had what I consider a good vibrato. To me, I think...

Re: My personal experience with Blackwood pipes (had no choice but to attach it)

Klondike: Yeah Mirella Freni's vibrato is actually pretty good, I just looked her up just now. It's not particularly as good as Bartoli, yet it is a lot better than Diana Damro though! Mirella is,...

Re: My personal experience with Blackwood pipes (had no choice but to attach it)

The final paragraph - this has the recording!
Given that this recording is nearly 45 minutes long, I had no choice but to upload it to a server. Even scaling it down to a 25 megabyte size would make...

Re: My personal experience with Blackwood pipes (had no choice but to attach it)

So, I've mentioned the fact that these pipes are made mostly from African Blackwood, which I'd been scared of until recently. But, even worse, they have engraved silver! Um, silver? NO! Who the...

Re: My personal experience with Blackwood pipes (had no choice but to attach it)

Something that is actually pretty intresting: I've compared several sets of pipes to good opera singers that I have been listening to since 2014, especially after discovering the 13-year-old at the...
