Re: Pirate Set?

There was a thread on sea shanties a few months ago http://forums.bobdunsire.com/forums/showthread.php?t=168005&highlight=shanty

You might find a few suitable tunes there.

Kevin

Re: Is it worth my while to get smallpipes?

Fair enough and I can understand your dedication to GHB. I used to feel the same way but over the past decade have more or less given up playing GHB in favour of SSP . I was only taking issue with...

Re: Is it worth my while to get smallpipes?

OK, I'll bite. I agree with everything said on this thread except for the above. Agree that SSP are not a great practice instrument for GHB because of the pressure, straight bore etc. I also agree...

Re: "Phase locking" drones

It seems that the drone is most like a closed conical bore air column that plays a fundamental an octave lower than expected (for a conical bore). Definitely seems like an odd combination of...

Re: Social Distance Piping

Nicely done! :thumb:

Did you all play with a metronome or did someone record a melody track first?

Re: "Phase locking" drones

Thanks Jon, I dont know why I never realised GHB drones had all the overtones present. I am guessing that is is because of the stepped conical bore achieved with the drone sections. I haven't had...

Re: "Phase locking" drones

Hi Jon,

I just want to make sure I understand this part correctly. So both the drone and the stock are essentially closed cylindrical air columns, which have overtones at 3, 5, 7, 9, etc. times...

Re: "Phase locking" drones

I'm just thinking out loud here but I am wondering if the length of the chanter stock could also be fine tuned to provide a bit of phase locking between some of the chanter notes (A, C, E?) and the...

Re: 500 Miles dot source & 'Love' tune suggestion

PS. If you can find a mic'd stomp box to tap your foot on, 500 miles would sound much more interesting.

Re: 500 Miles dot source & 'Love' tune suggestion

500 miles can be transposed to fit but it is boring without other instruments. I bought a copy from musicnotes for a few dollars and transposed the melody to fit.

I would second She Moved...

Re: "Phase locking" drones

This is interesting. Are you finding that the optimum stock length depends on reed strength or type, or is it only a function of the fundamental frequency of the drone note?

If it is the...

Re: Breton Tunes

It would be interesting to know how much one influenced the other. There is a strong Acadian influence in parts of Cape Breton... Barry Shear's could likely tell us.

Best regards,
Kevin

Re: Breton Tunes

Hi Salmun,

I would second any recommendation for Barry Shear's Cape Breton collections, but I think the OP was looking for information about music from the Breton region in France.

Re: French Tunes

Hi Bob,

Here is a short film featuring Vive La Rose http://www.nfb.ca/film/vive_la_rose_en/

I believe I also saw it in a pipe music book called Songs of Newfoundland, which I can't lay my hands...

Re: French Tunes

Someone linked a fine performance of Je vous salue Marie on here a few months ago. I think Vive La Rose should fit as well.

Kevin

Re: Fagerstrom Techno Help

I'm not sure what would cause that but most problems are caused by one of:

- dying battery
- dry hands (fixed with a bit of lotion), or
- dirt build up on the contacts.

Hope this helps,...

Re: Irish session tunes on SSP

You can't cross finger a C-nat on SSP but several makers include a right hand thumb hole for C-nat on A chanters (D# on C chanters, F on D chanter etc.).

Kevin

Re: Irish session tunes on SSP

Hi Richard,

Very interesting results, thank you for sharing them. Any chance you could also share the names of the tunes you reviewed in each of the chanter categories?

Kevin

Re: Smallpipes in other pitches besides A or D?

Oops. You are right Calum. The bore would have to be increased to raise the pitch.

Re: Smallpipes in other pitches besides A or D?

You could probably get the pitch a little higher than D without much more finger squeeze, by narrowing the bore, but that would likely negatively affect the volume and timbre.

Re: Smallpipes in other pitches besides A or D?

I have Banton SSP chanters in A, C and D. C definitely has the most pleasing sound to me, but I typically play the A chanter because it works most seamlessly with the other musicians I play with. ...
