Re: "B" Flat Set up

I wish some Bb contests would be held, either for bands, or for an invitational open level solo comp. Would probably also sound a little more accessible to non-pipers.

I think one issue is that...

Re: Leather Pipe Bag Tie-in Issue

I did my first tie-in several months ago, with the close guidance of a very experienced piper. It was a sheep bag, no pre-cut holes. We traced the holes and cut them out with a razor blade (or...

Re: "B" Flat Set up

Wanted to ask on this thread since it already has so much good info -

I was thinking of getting a Bb chanter - in addition to the ones mentioned already (G1, Shepherd, McCallum), has anyone tried...

Re: Balance Tone Drone Reeds

That was one of my issues with them. They made noise with very little air in the bag. (I had the same problem with Kinnairds, just btw). Strike ins were very easy, though I had to rapidly inflate...

Re: Drone Volume in Old Recordings

I don't think the drones are too loud .. maybe there's echo because it's indoors? Probably would have sounded different in the open air. Maybe also the cane reeds are set a bit open, to reduce the...

Re: Flat High G

Thanks for the replies -

Yes, hot and humid here.

I know to set a tuner to just intonation, and this is obvious enough to tell by ear.

I thought maybe I damaged or mishandled the reed...

Flat High G

I have a flat High G on my solo chanter - wooden Dunbar Elite I (about 472-475hz). It's a Husk reed. The reed is seated pretty deep and snug, and there is a little bit of tape on most of the notes,...

Re: Balance Tone VS. BT High Resonance Drone Reeds

Hello,
I am also an incurable drone reed tinkerer. I am not familiar with the High Resonance model, but I have a set of the original (I may sell them on ebay shortly, because I'm not using them),...

Re: Your 2019 setup?

I enjoy these threads.

New for me this year is a Begg sheep bag. I was skeptical that it would benefit someone of my level (grade 4 solo, grade 5 band), but I have to say I like it. I stop...

Re: Contests for G4 in NY Metropolitan Area

The Hudson Valley Celtic festival in Milton, NY is a nice games too. It's strictly a piping/drumming competition now, with some food and beer vendors. It's on a nice grounds, very scenic. They...

Re: Fitting cane drone reeds according to bore size

Hi,

I can't answer your questions directly, hopefully a reed maker chimes in. What I can say is that I have a lower pitch solo chanter, and I got a set of cane reeds made to play with it - I...

Link not showing up. I'm assuming it's a photograph? I know people who may be interested in the picture or other info you have about it.

Re: 78 rpm

Did they not tune their drones back then? At all? The drones aren't even in tune with each other, never mind to the pitch of the chanter.

Plenty of pipers today play vintage pipes, cane reeds,...

Re: Wygent drone reeds

Interesting.

I don't have an MG reed to compare to, but the screw from a Henderson Carbon fiber reed does not fit an Ezeedrone. If and EZee fits an MG though... I'm missing something. If I...

Re: Wygent drone reeds

Do these only fit MG drone reeds? I'm wondering if they would fit the tuning screw on a Henderson Deluxe reed.
Do they change the sound of the reed (other than merely lowering the pitch)? I...

Re: Pet hair and bag covers

Cat hair is pernicious.
I was recently issued a NEW cover that came pre-cat-haired. It had merely been in a certain band member's car, in a box, before being handed out.

I recommend a lint...

Re: The end of the world as we know it...really?

I think the drama on the podcasts and piping sites are "grade 1 problems."
The vast majority of us are in the lower grades.

The situation in the lower grades probably varies widely from what...

Re: Reeding a 440 Maclellen chanter

Out of curiosity, what drone reeds are you playing that tune that low? Or do you need extenders?

FWIW, I have a Dunbar Elite I chanter, which is their lower pitch model, made to play at 472-475...

Re: Drone Reed Issues & Advice sort

I have this issue with my solo chanter, which is down in the 470's. My pipes on the other hand would really rather be up around 480+ with most current reeds, which is great for band, but means I...

Re: Drone Reeds and Pressure Sensitivity

I'm still working on my steadiness, but I find that my drones aren't the issue - they're steadier than I can blow. What I mean is, they stay at the same pitch with variations in pressure, even when...

Re: Four part (maybe five, max) Pibroch recommendations?

I played this at my first competition last year. I don't get lessons in piobaireachd specifically, so I learned it by listening to recordings and reading the setting from the Piob. Society. I...

Re: Learning Tunes By Ear

I think learning by ear should be cultivated more.
Some people don't learn well from sheet music to begin with. I know old and young pipers who prefer to learn a tune by hearing it and/or...

Re: Flapper hinge...up or down?

Hard agree.

I'm going back to a flapper, to use my split stock in a sheep bag (Moose valve absolutely not possible). If I understand the topic, 12 O'clock refers to where the staple is along...

Hi Justin -

Any reputable make from the UK, Canada, or the US should be a quality instrument.

Depending where you are in PA, you may be able to go to Pipeline bagpipes and get fitted out in...
