Re: Constructive Criticism for Pipers

Haha, I know what you mean. So far it has been really friendly, and I think I've made it clear in the rules that it's a no-tolerance zone for rudeness or negative feedback that isn't backed by...

Re: Practice Chanter Reed - Warped by Sun

Good luck! For heating them up, I'd try an over set at about 50C, not much more, and once it's been in for a few minutes just turn it off and leave it to cool.

Re: Inspiring Movie Scene Featuring Pipers

There's a shot in that Pathe clip, at 1.01 - maybe I'm imagining it but I'm convinced one of those soldiers is Hamish Henderson. It was his idea to put all the pipe bands floating around in Italy...

Re: Piping and Covid

One should distinguish between fitness and health. Certainly piping can only make you fitter; whether that means much in terms of health, well, maybe. I'm not sure what effect it can have against...

Re: Practice Chanter Reed - Warped by Sun

In theory, if you took them to bits, bound them to a round thing of the right curvature, heated them up again, and cooled them, and tied them back into a reed, they should work just fine.

In...

Re: Leaving Friday Harbor

The name of the collection is Bothwell Boy - a google search throws up plenty of results, though I've just seen that it's dated 1998 (sure not) in which case it might be too old to have Leaving...

Re: Question on silver...

Short answer - no, there was no requirement that silver be hallmarked[1], and you do see silver sets from time to time without. Anything made since 1973 *should* have been hallmarked by law, but I...

Re: Piping via Skype/Zoom or whatever

There are two things that happen - one, yes, a normal microphone will be overloaded by a bagpipe. Sticking it under a cushion or further away or both might help a bit. Two, a lot of these systems...

Re: Sruth Gu Bhatarsaigh

A literal translation might be "a current to Vatersay", but a more literal translation of the sentiment would be "carry me [home] to Vatersay".

One thing to be wary of is that Gaelic song is no...

How about the 51st Highland Division at Wadi Akarit?

A nice little jaunty tune with a similar feel but would pair up...

Re: Skansen Reel

That does seem very plausible! It was puzzling me why someone would write a tune named after a construction company without some trace of it being left.

Re: Early Canntaireachd Recordings

Yes, Tobar an Dualchais and possibly the Alan Lomax archives are almost certain to host the earliest known recordings. The value of making sound recordings of source musicians of content of this...

Re: Skansen Reel

One more lead: a correspondent informs me he copied the tune from a published collection in the late 70s. Looking at Canon's bibliography, and crossreferencing the books that didn't make it to...

Re: a Hymn a day

Yes, I recently started working on playing 4-parted hymn tunes on the piano to practice my sightreading and I thought I was fairly literate in church music - sixty pages in I haven't yet encountered...

Re: Skansen Reel

A brief update - enquiries have discovered that the tune was in fact listed in Pekaar, but under Scansen, not Skansen. It was published in Chris Hamilton's Tone Czar collection. In the meantime,...

Re: Leaving Friday Harbor

As far as I'm aware it's never been published for pipes. John has published his own collection, but the setting there will be substantially the same as the one you have found.

Re: Bag Cover

I like a bag cover that's as close fitting as possible without actually restricting the bag - one of the main things that makes a bag slip is the bag slipping against the cover rather than the cover...

Re: "Wrongly" arranged and misprinted tunes

One more I'm not sure about: Mary Anderson of Lochranza, last line, first note of second bar - C or E? C is consistent, but is perfectly musically plausible (Jim MacGillivray plays it). It was...

Re: "Wrongly" arranged and misprinted tunes

But that's extremely misleading. Even if you accept that individual players can and should vary and rearrange what they play - by no means an accepted standard in mainstream highland piping - there...

Re: Constructive Criticism for Pipers

Yes, this is exactly the ethos that I'm trying to create - that it's not a competition, it's not a hierarchy, it's just an exploration of the elements of performance. The way I phrased this in the...

Re: ABC music software

Yes, it's just a big list of how various tunes start, for memory-jogging purposes.

I don't use EasyABC, but I think the general idea is that you generate it and print it off, and that's about it...

Oh aye, I wasn't implying the topic was unworthy of discussion! Just the limits of what music theory can tell us.

Re: Who invented the bagpipes?

A big ol' [citation needed] on that one, tbh. My understanding is that the earliest absolutely unambiguous definitely-a-bagpipe is the images of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, which are 13th century. ...

Re: Help with transition to pipes...

Basically, anything you can play while thinking about something else. Part of increasing musicianship is being able to do the actually "playing music" bit almost on autopilot, while your conscious...
