Re: Naval Dining In

This has been discussed frequently - you might do a quick search of the board for other such threads - but the following site provides a basic overview of piping for formal events, as well as...

Re: Worst venue of 2018...go!

You know I've often wondered how locations for solo piping in particular are chosen, and whether or not those responsible are A) pipers themselves and therefore sympathetic to the variables that will...

Re: Top 5 List

Interesting thought. Do any bands do this? We of course have YouTube videos of the piping to practice along with, but I'd be down with practicing along with drum scores as well.

Re: Top 5 List for better band ensemble

Great responses - thanks!

Big things like tempos, playing on the beat, tuning, etc. are all pretty much a given (but still worthy of highlighting), but what about more nuanced factors such as...

Top 5 List for better band ensemble

So what are the top 5 things a pipe band can do to improve their ensemble score. Asking for a friend.

Re: What happened at McCain's memorial service

It's well know that McCain was vehemently opposed to torture of any kind, having experienced it himself in life. How ironic that he should be exposed to it as well after death.

Re: Ouch! Bagpipe concert review

Hmmm, a "pack" of pipers? I guess I'm doing pretty well then - before I quit cigarettes I was smoking nearly 2 packs a day. By comparison, considering that I only go to band on the weekend a pack a...

Credit Card Payments

I occasionally encounter gigs where I have a corporate client that wants to pay using the company's credit card - how do others handle? Is it worth it to get a Square account/reader, or is there a...

Re: Top 10 bagpipe tunes

A bit of a joke - certainly they're 3 of the tunes most known to the non-bagpipe aware public (at least in the U.S., although STB might also be referred to as "that song that's played in the Irish...

Re: Top 10 bagpipe tunes

Well I think they actually got it pretty much on point - the top 3 pipe tunes of all time in fact are:

1. Scotland the Brave
2. Amazing Grace
3. that other one

Re: The Piano Guys Performance

You should have requested fair compensation as musicians - I highly doubt that the Piano Guys played for free just for the privilege of showing up at that venue, so why should you? No piper should...

Re: To tape or not to tape (and how much)

This always boggles my mind. Is there any other group in the world in which the musicians discuss at length whether or not their instruments should be in tune?

On his FB page John also posted a link to the "making of" video, which is pretty interesting (I thought):

Re: First 2 parts of a 4-parter?

That was my thought also, and well put. As to the last point, while true that many bands may play 2 parts of 4-part tunes in their medleys, etc., I daresay they're typically combined in a way that...

Re: Playing only 2 drones: acceptable?

Been there, done that; although in my case it was a juniper berry, which rattled around in my bass drone unbeknownst until it finally cut out the reed halfway through my 2/4 march. :bleh:

Re: Why bagpipes are sad - Explained!

In all fairness to Bear, I've been interviewed by a TV reporter before (about bagpipes) and what ended up on the air was pretty far from what I really said. They basically edited out most of the...

Re: Competition in your 30s

Been there, done that. It's going to feel even stranger when you get your butt kicked by an 11 year old. Just kick yourself for starting so late in life and suck it up.

Re: St. Patrick's Day Rant

Well before you do I'll just add the closing remark that this cut goes both ways - over the weekend I piped a Tartan Day event with another piper who only played their "Irish set" tunes. But none of...

Re: Best Drone Reeds for 1980s Gillanders & McLeod Pipes

I don't know about the brassy comment, at least not as I interpret the term. I feel that the Cannings give a fairly warm tone in my G&Ms. I actually had Canning tenors with Kinnaird bass for...

Re: Best Drone Reeds for 1980s Gillanders & McLeod Pipes

Aye, I have a set of the glass Croziers also and they're amazing, but too bold for my solo chanter so I went back to the Cannings.

Re: Best Drone Reeds for 1980s Gillanders & McLeod Pipes

I have late 60s era G&M - not sure how different they are from later periods, but they love Cannings and Kinnairds.
