Re: Calling Doon the Line

No, it wasn't. A different song, called On the Road To Passchendaele was. The details are on Alan's website.

Re: Calling Doon the Line

That is a different tune, called On The Road To Passchendaele, by Gavin Stoddart, and with lyrics by the same composer. Page 182 of SG III. Entirely different song to Calling Doon The Line.

Re: Bass reeds and tuning

Yes, if you have a wandering part of your setup it is more often than not the bass. Sometimes it is the drone and sometimes the reed, but I've never worked out a satisfactory explanation.

Re: So this is what the wait feels like... (new pipes)

I suspect it was a characteristic of reeds profiled with a chisel on a flat surface, rather than sanded as most modern reeds are. It would have the effect of making the tips less tapered, making the...

Re: Unusual set of pipes on Ebay uk

Bass is clearly different from the tenors and looks a bit more finished. Home-made? Quite possibly. Even the two tenors aren't identical in the wood.

Re: Green Hills of Tyrol earliest setting.

So, to answer my own question - yes, it does - the exact scene depicts Tyroleans conquered by Germans being forced to dance with their conquerors, in what looks like a beautiful pastoral scene.

Re: Green Hills of Tyrol earliest setting.

For easier reading for those used to A-based melodies, here it is transposed up a tone and in 3/4 rather than waltz beaming:

Re: Help with breathing/squeezing technique...

Hard reeds tend to vary in pitch less with pressure; they're either on pitch or silent, both acceptable answers from a competition point of view.

Whether you'd be better off teaching people...

Re: Someone must know this tune...

I'm not sure how I would describe my theology, but for my part it doesn't involve making a bunch of young women stand around barefoot in a river for several hours while you do a video shoot...

Re: The Bruce Matthews March

Has to be the one, I think - Neil Sutherland was PM of the Calgary Highlanders through most of the war, and Willie Ross knew him well.

Re: "Scottish" DNA results for native-born Scots

I mean, I was born in the Vale of Leven, at a time when brown faces were a rarity, and I know my DNA includes African, German, Italian, Swedish, Irish, and native American ancestry, and that's only...

I see the domain expiry date is the 28th of December, so it looks like the webhosting plan has expired.

At the moment, it looks like the content can be accessed via archive.org.

Re: Moisture control

The string can be discarded.

Check the order details against your invoice or other documentation - you may have ordered Bannatyne's moisture control system and gotten a bottle trap by mistake,...

Re: Squeezing w/Shoulder & Back

I don't think you *can* squeeze a bag without involving your shoulder and back. I wouldn't worry overmuch; the main thing you're learning to do when it comes to squeezing is learning to push against...

Re: Trying to identify a march!

Yes, that's Highland Lassie Going To The Fair alright. I don't recognise the exact setting - bit different from Scots Guards, Seaforths, and what John Burgess used to play.

Re: Need help getting a seal

Reed wranglers and the like may help, though to be honest I am sceptical.

Nerve damage can be slow to heal and as you've probably been told, months and years is just as normal as days and weeks....

Re: Help with breathing/squeezing technique...

Right, so...

- the pressure that your high A is working at is the correct pressure for the whole of the scale
- so your reed is probably a bit on the hard side, which is inevitable when you're...

Re: Can anyone identify this jig?

One cold beer for that man - John Wilson Book 2 it is!

I must have picked it up from a recording somewhere as I've certainly never learnt it from the music. What a cracker of a tune though....

Re: Are teachers correcting crossing noises?

Even in a band that size, if it has any quality to it crossing noises are clearly audible on the opposite side of the circle - which can be surprising, when we all know the shambles that can be going...

Re: P/M Iain M. Morrison (1946-2020)

I imagine a lot of people have never heard Iain play, since he largely kept out of the piping public's eye after he gave up competing. The only recording I have is the one he did with his son Iain...
