Re: Portable recording hardware and software

The PipeHacker website has a good setup discussion. I don't remember the specifics, but it is all spelled out and the recordings there are good.

Re: Steady pressure and repurposing equipment.

I like the water manometer. They sell one at the Pipers Dojo and it can be used for steadiness training as well as a visual guide for calibration of reeds.

Re: Boyle's Law and Bag Size

I think big bags were a fad. Seems these days better-fit is more important. So if you don't feel right or comfortable with a big bag, find a better fitting one.

Re: Does a new chanter reed need to "break in"?

If you break in a reed, i think it only gets a little easier. So i bet it is best to get a reed fairly close to your comfort level of strength.
After it breaks in, hopefully it is more consistent...

Re: Can't hear my pipes

If I understand, it sounds like you are doing well. You don't want to be identifiable in the band. So if you can hear yourself, then so can the PM and an audience or judge and you are not blending....

Re: Bagpipe Chanter Reeds Issues.

Wild guess - could the tuner have been reading the next note up? Then the tape brought it back to reading a high pitch of the actual note?

Re: Rubber bands

I think placing a band just above the wrapping can help stabilize a reed that is acting inconsistent. It also makes the low notes sharper (and the whole reed sharper and easier).

Re: David Naill Pipes

Great set of pipes. The only I have ever owned...so I don't have anything to compare against. I have played many different drone reeds and chanters successfully.

Re: Tuner our tone generator

I think the Murray Professional Bagpipe Tuner has a tone generator that will do a scale and adjust with the LA pitch you set. For pipe chanters.

Re: Kinnaird reeds stopping (please help)

Only because this isn't on your list, did you try and scoot the bridal a little so more tongue is exposed? Just small amounts at a time and testing until it stops cutting out.

Re: Old Better than New?

My buddies have an ongoing conversation about objects. Pipes made by a specific maker vs the reproductions now available. Do you care about the actual process or the "story" about the instrument,...

Re: Outside and middle Tenor stocks - difference?

I can't see a difference and I don't think there is supposed to be, but over 20 years there is a difference in how tight the hemp is if I accidentally switch the two.

Re: Matching Drone Reeds

If the outcome you want is a matching sound in a band, then you might start by listening to drones and what kind of output they are producing. Then see if they need calibration or replacement. ...

Re: matching reeds/chanters for competition?

Would you say there becomes a time when your gear is holding you back? You have been able to overcome other roadblocks and now it is time to remove other variables that are in your way. If you...

Re: How much air do drone reeds "really" leak?

I haven't been convinced that test measures anything that important. I think there are better ways for testing the efficiency of your setup. Calibrating the amount of air a drone reed takes in...

Re: Pipe Chanter Spinning Hemp

As noted, some like the cobbler waxed tail to start with, but if you smash the hemp every few layers (between some wooden blocks or something), the hemp flattens and really grabs the base and doesn't...

I understand some are physically bent and others have some sort of heat treatment at the bend.

Re: Replacement tongue for Ezeedrone reed

I never fixed a tongue blade, but did replace bridals when needed. O-Rings from Lowes or such.

Re: Ezeedrone reed help

Are the drone reeds calibrated to take the "right" amount of air? If they are set up so the bridal is too open and too much air flows out the reed you might get the effect you describe. Adjustments...

Re: Why can't a low grade band get the sound of a top band?

Well it has nothing to do with the dexterity of fingers, so what are the other factors? Maintenance of the instrument, calibration and knowledge of reeds, regularity of practice, proper practice of...

Re: Keep choking

It sounds like you are playing at a pressure too close to your choke point of the reed. It might not do that if you can play more consistently at a higher pressure (blowing more/harder) for the...
