Re: You play like a girl!

Interesting that you pick an example of a sport which does not have a kids-to-professional pipeline for development of female players to suggest that a woman couldn't be the Quarterback on a winning...

Re: 4/4 marches

I've run into people who claim 3/4 Marches cannot be marched to because it is "an odd number of beats per bar."

Because no one ever marches to Green Hills and Battle's Over, right?

Bloomington (IN) Pipers Society Gathering, Friday Aug 13

A few months ago we announced our pipers' society in Bloomington here on the forums, and there was a little bit of interest. We're having another gathering tomorrow, Friday August 13th from 6:00PM to...

Re: Best inexpensive kilt?

I don't know if you have in the past addressed this, or if this is a realistic option for you, but have you considered joining a band?

I didn't own my own kilt for the first 12 years of my piping...

Re: Ivory Crush

What an absolute waste.

The way to prevent elephant poaching is to strengthen the enforcement capabilities of the governments who have the animals in their borders, not destroy existing material....

Re: Costa Mesa 2015

Out in the MWPBA they make a point of not playing on cement, all the contests out here play on grass. The only one I can't vouch for is the Minnesota Games, as I have not been to that one, and...

Re: Sick of bagpipe jokes?

I recently visited a practice of a non-competitive band, and two of its members were discussing how they hadn't needed to tune their drones in 3 whole months! Their pipes were just that stable.

I...

Re: Alma Michigan games 2015

I love this idea, and it's a little bit like the Goshen Pipe Band Challenge - the participating bands are the ones, when it first started, who paid for everything - judges, venue, everything. Also,...

Re: Alma Michigan games 2015

These things run in cycles, "Scottishness" simply is not in style at the moment, so we're in a lull period. I think someday it will come back to the heights of some past periods, but it will always...

Re: Sight Reading

I used to be terrible at sight reading. I stopped piping actively through college (no space to practice, had a very hard time finding space), so I just got a ton of music books, sat down with them,...

Re: Alma Michigan games 2015

I definitely feel there were fewer people there - especially on the contest end. Though the Grade 4 band competition was larger this year than last, and the Grade 5 was smaller. But on the solo end...

Re: Opinions requested

There's a few craftsmen in the U.S.!

Murray Huggins in Oregon (makes Colin Kyo Bagpipes), Brian Donaldson in Delafield, Wisconsin (maker of Inveran - I know for a fact that he does instrument...

Re: US Open Pipe Band Championship

I suppose on the solo side, that's what Winter Storm is. The problem with a pipe band championship in North America is that there are so few bands compared to Scotland, and much further apart. Nearly...

Re: US Open Pipe Band Championship

From what I understand, Alma used to get a lot more Canadian and Eastern participation, but with the rise of more local piping scenes, and the tightening of security along the American border, the...

Re: Chicago Highland Games

I think all piping events (solos and band) happen on Saturday. The only 2-day contest in the MWPBA is Alma. At Chicago solos are in the morning, bands are in the afternoon.

Re: Solo Competition Travel Distance

I'm pretty darn close to this, but we don't have nearly the same geographical space as the west does (I used to be in Arizona - hard to get anywhere without a ton of driving!), and nearly as many...

Re: Where are you putting your pipes when not playing?

I break them down into my case (top two sections of bass off, everything else stays on), wrap each drone and chanter up in a towel, and close the thing up. Because I have cats I leave my case in a...

Re: R.T. Shepherd status?

I just spent most of the past 3 months trying to:

Get the attention of a maker
Make my initial inquiries to a maker
get a price quote from a maker
Get the maker to remember to make my...

Re: Solo Competition Travel Distance

OUCH! I would have a very hard time with those distances.

Most contests where I am (Bloomington, Indiana) are within 5 hours of me - Springfield (IL), Alma (MI), Milwaukee (WI), Chicago (IL),...

Re: Anyone here start playing GHB as an older adult?

I don't really agree that the goal is to win in competition (obviously that's a goal of competition). I compete exclusively to improve, usually the way you can tell that is how you stack up to other...
