Re: Ideas for Helpful Piping Apps/Digital Tools?

Hi Joseph,

Iíve got experience with Python and C# + .NET. Let me know if you need any guidance!
I think the tape idea may be redundant, as when you put fresh tape on you can simply put tape...

Re: Pipe Band Numbers in Competition

Iím in agreement here. Imagine the uproar if some of the G1 bands that fail to unseat bands that are consistently placing in the top 5 at the worlds were bumped down to G2.
While theyíre not...

Re: Tone Protector

I was one of the cynics before trying it out, and I have to say Iím completely converted! Even bought another one for the band chanter last week.
In the 45įC Australian summer the TP keeps my reeds...

Re: Solo chanter

Old pre-Lee Naill and a MacAlister reed ;)
Canít go wrong with a Naill. I find the spread to be smaller than the MC2, but not so small that itís hard for people with larger fingers like the Kyo.

Re: Deura Reed Problem

Move the bridles on the tenor reeds up, towards the reed seat. This should open them up.
Try mouthblowing them, if theyíre still shutting off then continue moving the bridle up a few mm at a time...

Re: Off-brand "Bagpipe Trend" set: Lawrie? Pakistani?

Hi Erracht,

Some images of the set would help with identifying it. As for the lighter coloured wood, it could possibly be Cocobolo, but Iím not aware of too many makers using this in the 70ís.

Re: Predictions for the Next Decade

I think a lot of the changes weíll see if the next decade will largely be governed by expense. Sadly, patterned hose is probably prohibitively expensive for the average band, as is no1 dress.

Re: Building a chanter humidor

I get the feeling the humidity may be too high for the Blackwood. It should ideally be around 50%, whereas reeds prefer around 85%

Why not create some sort of humidifier that fits the top of the...

Re: Former PM charged with child porn (Calif.)

Sad to see yet another piper in the news for the wrong reasons.

I suppose this reinforces the need for appropriate background checks for our band leaders and tutors. Predators seek out positions...

Re: Hemping joints.

Ah hemping... ask any two pipers how they do it and youíll get two completely different answers

I find joints done solely with unwaxed hemp tend to swell with moisture and spin on the pin. The...

Re: Glenfiddich pipes and chanter makes?

Iím sure this will open a can of worms, but thereís nothing wrong with the chanter pitching around 474. Some (myself included!) actually prefer the slightly lower pitch.
If youíre not playing in a...

Re: Rehearsal "activities"

Itíll be interesting to hear some of the more Ďout-thereí practice techniques.
My bands rehearsals are typically 2 hours, with an hour on practice chanters and an hour on pipes.
Once on pipes we...

I know of a few, the upturned brim works great if you play pipes on the left shoulder. Looks daggy as anything though!

Re: Can anyone identify these?

Yes, the mounts would be orange if they were catalin. These look to be ivory, which the OP could confirm by posting a higher resolution picture with the Schaefer lines visible.
OP also doesnít say...

Re: Can anyone identify these?

By no means an expert, but these look like Hardies to me. Possible 50ís?
The pictures are too low res to say if the mounts are ivory or not, but the patina and age suggests they are.

I use a Zoom H2n with a windsock and the gain turned down. Works well both indoors and outdoors.

Re: Your 2019 setup?

I agree with Patrickís comments on the Xtreme bass, if I werenít...

Re: Oil before repairing a crack

Iíd suggest taking the cracked part to a pipe maker to have the pin whipped or replaced. Filling a crack with epoxy is just a recipe for more cracks.

Re: Too Much Tape

Are you using the same chanter and chanter reed as the rest of the band? If youíre sinking the reed into the seat and still using a lot of tape you may just be pushing the chanter beyond the limits...
