Re: Your first piobaireachd teacher

My first Piobaireachd teacher was Seamus MacNeill at the summer school for the College of Piping in CA when I was 14. He taught me Glengarry's Lament, I will never forget his passion for playing...

Re: Grainger & Campbell pipes, early & late

My parents bought my Grainger and Campbell set back in 1985 when I was a lad, but I believe they were a couple of years old by then. I have since passed them down to my son and I still get nothing...

Re: Grade 3 Competition jigs

I do like the sound of Minnie Hynd, two others I like are the Jig of Slurs and Clumsy Lover. I've heard Clumsy Lover in band competition but not necessarily in solo, any other suggestions?

Re: Grade 3 Competition jigs

The rule book for WUSPBA states "In light music, a minimum of four-parted tunes are required except where noted." Since nothing is noted under the Grade 3 section I can only assume that the Jig has...

Grade 3 Competition jigs

I'm anticipating moving up and competing in Grade 3 next year and I realized that the first couple of venues I will most likely go to have a Jig competition. I can't say that I have what I would...

Re: The Winston S. Churchill Perpetual Memorial Trophy

Thanks Andrew, I figured as much. Determining the aggregate winner is difficult for last year since three people won at least a 1st place and either a 2nd or 3rd. Without knowing the results of the...

Re: The Winston S. Churchill Perpetual Memorial Trophy

I'll try to send an email to those in charge, I doubt they will give me contact info but a name would be nice. WUSPBA does have the winners of the individual heats but I don't think they list the...

Re: The Winston S. Churchill Perpetual Memorial Trophy

I know this is a very old thread, but does anyone know who won this award for 2014? I was lucky enough to win this award this last weekend at the Caledonian Games but they were unable to give it to...

Re: Input on Grade 4 Piobaireachd tune choice...

First of all I wanted to thank everyone for your input and advice on this thread. Tying back to the original topic of the thread I decided to go forward with practicing Glengary's Lament for...

Re: Input on Grade 4 Piobaireachd tune choice...

I like the idea of slightly offsetting one of the drones before competing and readjusting it in front of the judge. I've never done that intentionally before. Not so much for myself but for my 14...

Re: Input on Grade 4 Piobaireachd tune choice...

After reading a lot of everyone's comments I went back to my score sheet and also thought about the verbal comments I got from the judge. When he told me that the my drones were pegged a little low...

Re: Input on Grade 4 Piobaireachd tune choice...

On my first competition I actually did approach the judge afterward because I really wanted instruction of where I needed to improve and I did not get it from the score sheet. His response was that...

Re: Input on Grade 4 Piobaireachd tune choice...

olypiper,

Thanks for your comments. I have been using John D Burgesses' performance as my baseline for playing the tune. I've listened and played along with it every chance I can while...

Re: Input on Grade 4 Piobaireachd tune choice...

ElRanchoHotTub,

I'm tempted to say that at least the ground of the tune lacks something I want to present in a performance (personal opinion, please do not take offence). Here are the comments...

Input on Grade 4 Piobaireachd tune choice...

I just started competing in the Grade 4 Piobaireachd this year and have been using "Black Donald's March" as my tune but I just don't feel like I'm putting as much emotion into the music as I want...

Piobaireachd Marching/Pacing in Competition

This is my first year competing with a piobaireachd, while I know grade 4 is not required to march I would like to start doing it right now rather than learning it later. My question is what is the...
