Re: The BlowHard

Or you could make something like this, which costs less than the Blowhard & has more uses:

Purchase 6" of vinyl tubing, with 1/2" outside diameter / 3/8" inside diameter.

Then buy a 3/8-Inch X...

Re: This is driving me nuts - mouth-blown pitch vs. pipe-blown pitch

I thank you all for your comments. I've found 3 reeds that will work!

Re: This is driving me nuts - mouth-blown pitch vs. pipe-blown pitch

@ Klondike - Thank you! That's something I never thought of! I'll have to try it with a spare chanter stock I have, and see how that works. That would remove the size-of-the-mouth variable.

Re: This is driving me nuts - mouth-blown pitch vs. pipe-blown pitch

@ Baggy - They start out midway in, and then get progressively deeper. And the deeper they get, the sharper High G gets.

@ CalumII - Thank you, I'll give that a shot!

This is driving me nuts - mouth-blown pitch vs. pipe-blown pitch

So I have a bunch of reeds, and a bunch of chanters, and I'm in the process of getting a couple of reeds ready for the St. Patrick's Day festivities. I usually pitch at 475 in my pipes, but the gig...

Re: AAaarrrgggghhhhh!!!! My bag has sprung a leak!!!

I thank everyone for their replies!

As I said earlier, I am unable to buy a new bag at this time. Hopefully I'll be able to get a new Canmore later this year.

I'll give the patch idea a...

AAaarrrgggghhhhh!!!! My bag has sprung a leak!!!

Newish Canmore Hybrid. Any ideas as to a possible solution? This is the only area where it's leaking, and finances preclude the purchase of a new bag at this time.

Re: Scotian Bag

L&M made proprietary products for seasoning their Scotian bags.

Step 1 was the Sealer, which looked like Elmer's Glue.

Step 2 was the Conditioner.

Some retailers might still sell them,...

Re: What the Masters are playing

I for one would like to know their entire setups;

Chanter
Chanter reed
Bag
Drones
Drone reeds

It would be interesting to get each Master's take on why they play what they play. I think it...

Re: airstream tilt

I've been playing my pipes with both a Moose & flapper valve on the blowstick for years with zero issues. Never a hint of "back pressure flubbering by the two valves not being in sync at any moment"....

Re: Large mouthpiece protector

I started off with a big bore round mouthpiece. Then one night I played my teacher's pipes. He had a big bore oval, and I noticed an immediate difference; it was much easier to play than mine. About...

Re: Large mouthpiece protector

I'm another big fan of the Reed Wrangler. It definitely improved my playing time. Leads to more relaxed playing for me too.

Re: Best Acoustics (in the World) For Bagpipes?

The Dan Harpole Cistern, at Fort Worden in Washington. Really, really odd space. I was there for a martial arts intensive, and happened to luck into an invite with a group of music students who were...

Re: Kinnaird Edge Reeds

Could you please add a little information, because curious minds want to know:

1) What type of Drones and Chanter / Chanter reed do you currently play?

2) What were your previous drone reeds?...

Thank you! I've been checking the Queen Mary site on a regular basis. This is the first time I've seen the competition times posted.

Re: To Goose or not to Goose

I use a Mark Cushing practice chanter with my goose. It is the closest PC I've found that matches a pipe chanter, because it has deep counter-bored holes.

Queen Mary Scots Festival Competitions?

Has anyone seen any info on competition times posted anywhere?

Re: To Goose or not to Goose

I've always felt the same way about the angle differences between the practice chanter and the pipe chanter, especially with birls. Very easy on the PC, less so on the pipes. Given that I live in an...

I'm glad they didn't find anything, and I hope the issue is resolved. Let us know what happens when you get back on the pipes.
