Re: Kilgour Edinburgh pipes

I recently purchased the set the St James family offered and it is virtually unplayed, and family lore claims it to be the last set he made. Chanter stamped G. Kilgour Strathspey. Tied to an L&M...

Re: Lynn Easton

That was a tough one, Mike. He was integral to our sound back in the day, and always contributed his musical vision with great fun and energy. His humor was a delight while waiting for parades to...

Re: Value of Henry Starck pipes?

Insured value? Probably US$3000
Market value now? Tough to tell, but maybe US$1800 in unrestored condition. As said below, price for vintage pipes not in the Henderson mode are down and will...

I have some NOS reeds that will work with a bit of scraping, but you may get ~460-465 Hz. PM me if you want to try some.

Re: Post Pandemic bag hygiene

No difference. Nobody else plays my pipe. Sheep bag with tube and Trapdri, Airtight seasoning, pour 70% isopropyl alcohol down the blowstock to fill the tune, swish around and let sit, then drain. ...

Re: Fake 'ivory'

"I believe this is the same material seen here on remounted 1920s Robertsons from Jim McGillivray's vintage pipes"

That's actually a set of Robertsons I currently have for sale. I believe it's ...

Re: ABW-Ebony Distinction

Usually spot grain difference on wood that looks like small end pores on ebony. Tough to differentiate by color, although old ebony can be deep black. If you want to see the natural grain, Mike,...

Re: How many sets do you own?

Ask David at Naills if he still has some old spun nickel ferrules. He made me a set of stocks for an ebony Lawrie set with tapered ferrules I sold recently.

So NOW you're worried about someone using your reeds for self-promotion.

Re: Lament at funerals

Mostly just AG at internment. But on the walk-up gathering, usually Cro Chinn Taile. The pibroch hiG's really get the joint jumping. If there is a big crowd strolling along, I put in T and C...

Re: Forum activity levels

[Maybe we should start a thread like:
“It’s time for PM So-and-so to step down!”
“Should XYZ Pipe Band Fold?”
“Is it time to kick women pipers back out?”
“All teachers be banned from judging!”...

Re: "B" Flat Set up

Because there is a market for them. Not all pipers want to play at current band pitch. Some pipers like to play with other instruments. Playing solo, I prefer lower pitch because that's the sound...

Re: eBay says Lawrie, what say you?

I'll take that bet, Don. Look at the top bass drone, between the cord guides and bottom edge of the bell (or within the "fountain")--you see no big fat bead. no bead = no Gillanders. Thow may...

Re: eBay says Lawrie, what say you?

They sure weren't worth the $1135 final bid. I had a grand set of G&Cs on ebay, slightly before this era, where the top profile had no slope between shoulders and fountain, and they couldn't get...

Re: Drone Volume in Old Recordings

RU Brown was very prolific at recording his playing and many tracks give as good a representation as any available for the time in both studio and field. The quality of much of his pibroch recording...

Re: Bit of a 'crack' problem needing some advice please

Ship the stock to a maker and have a delrin replica made with a cocobolo ferrule. Blowpipe and chanter stocks as delrin will make your life easier, and you keep the originals if you ever choose to...

Re: Just how low can you go?

From my own chanters, a very early Hardie was stable at A448, but the synthetic drone reeds had to be opened up too much to be easily playable, even with extenders. I think the bass drone would...

Re: Drone reed recommendation for mid 70s Lawrie pipes.

I prefer the Kinnaird Evolution reeds in Lawries of that era because they tune just a bit higher than the original or Edge styles. Air efficient too. Buzzy, but fun.
