Re: Reeding a 440 Maclellen chanter

True enough! Sorry about that.

Re: Reeding a 440 Maclellen chanter

I remember years ago a young and upcoming competitive piper in Glasgow (who's step dad was pipe maker Douglad MacPherson) had a Naill chanter that was carved beyond anything I have ever seen. It...

Re: Reeding a 440 Maclellen chanter

I have carved G holes before, but I don't own a MacLellan A=440 chanter. If you send me yours I would be happy to carve it for you. :-) I could make the high G hole huge!

If it were mine, I...

Re: Reeding a 440 Maclellen chanter

Yeah, it sounds like the hole needs to be opened up a bit.

Re: Reeding a 440 Maclellen chanter

In that situation, with the top of the high G hole taped too much (covering too much of the hole), I would simply carve the bottom of the high G hole to open it up an get rid of the chirping. ...

Re: Reeding a 440 Maclellen chanter

In fairness it isn't just one reed- I have more than one set of pipes, and I rotate them, and they are all on a dry ROSS MCS. Their reeds are outstanding, but I find the key to longevity is not...

Re: Reeding a 440 Maclellen chanter

Yeah, well going from typical modern pitch chanter (Bb+) of the same make to a concert Bb (A=466) chanter of the same make (Shepherd chanters) is not much of a stretch, but going to a concert A...

Re: Reeding a 440 Maclellen chanter

I never knew they made a Bb reed. I have played both regular Shepherd chanters and their Bb chanter and always interchanged reeds between them without issue.

Re: Naill Re-bore?

I have at times set my drones to play with two chanters- one modern pitch and one concert Bflat. I did it by setting the drones to play a little below the hemp line for the modern chanter and above...

Re: Drone Stability/Consistency

Well if you are using a sheep bag, then you are already using the best type of bag for stability, as long as you play it regularly. So you don't need an MCS. Go full Kinnaird and starts and stops...

Re: Drone Stability/Consistency

Just get a set of Kinnairds. They are virtually the same as Rockets. I have rockets in my pipes from long ago but I would have no reservations in Kinnairds.

While Ezzees do wear out after a...

Re: Naill Re-bore?

Well in that case, I would be interested in what you find out, and what you end up doing. Is there something deffective or do they just tune low on the pins compared to other brands? Assuming there...

Re: Naill Re-bore?

I have a set of pipes from around 1890 that I can get in tune on the hemp line or even higher through basic reed manipulation. Reboring is a pretty drastic step. Unless you are an advanced piper,...

Re: MCS attached to drones

The simple answer is yes, it does have an effect. Anytime you stick something into the base of the drone stocks, there is a dampening (quieting) of the drones. But as others have stated, it isn't...

Re: Drone reed preference in MacLellan drones

I have used a Rocket bass reed and Ezee tenors for many years in my MacLellans. Then again, I always ended up using the same setup in every other set I have used and use the same with my vintage...

Re: Which Chanter For Dunbar Drones

Another one worth considering is the Shepherd chanter. I have always found the holes and spacing to be fairly small on it. It is also very easy to reed and tune, and it is popular/common. Not sure...

Re: Bagpipe prices c1950

Yes, if we could only predict the future. Hell, around 2000 I bought a set of uilleann pipes and then sold them a couple of years later after deciding at my age I need to concentrate on the highland...

Re: Teachers and diaphragm vibrato

Just a thought- if vibrato works so well on the PC, and with other instruments as mentioned, would it not work on the pipes? The biggest problem I see on the pipes is that whenever I hear anyone do...

Re: Flat E on RJM Chanter

Yes, of course- that is what I meant. Thanks for the correction (might have caused confusion for a newbie).

Re: Flat E on RJM Chanter

Yes, you have to consider that, but you should only tape a little bit of the low A and all the other notes initially. So yes, you will have notes that will need more of the hole covered, but it...

Re: Flat E on RJM Chanter

I went to taping low A and all the holes years ago, right off the bat, with every chanter, whether it needs it or not. That way there is never any of this consternation over a flat note. I can make...

Re: Would you put an MCS in your child's first set?

Good point- I have actually given this some thought, and McCallum bagpipes had the perfect solution. I want him to develop good habits, and pulling out the chanter and stocking it is one of those...

Re: Would you put an MCS in your child's first set?

Correction- my bagpipes have a Ross Extended Small bag, not a regular small. So I don't have direct comparison of the Livingston Small vs. a standard Ross small.

Would you put an MCS in your child's first set?

I'm setting things up for my kid's first set to give to him at Christmas. I have already put in a tube trap with trap dri. I have a lot of stuff accumulated over the years, so I have the ability to...

Re: Dumb Question: Drones vs. Chanter Reed Strength

Well it looks like your question has been answered. I just want to add - hopefully you have learned that it wasn't a dumb question. It is something that every piper has gone through during the...
