Re: An epiphany/blowing tone

My blowing tone epiphany came a little over ten years ago (I was in my late 40s) when I joined a band pipe-majored by a world-class piper/tonemeister/reedmaker with a pipe corps mostly consisting of...

Re: Sharpness War

But the 19th century British pitch was not A=439 but A=452, called Old Philharmonic Pitch.

It's why old flutes saxes etc play so sharp, unless marked "LP" (low pitch) which is A=440.

Our modern...

Re: SFU & RMM - Lee son takes over RMM

Cool, it's such a great musical family.

I note they're playing what appear to be maple-mounted pipes. Are the pipes the Lee & Son brand, I wonder?

Re: "B" Flat Set up

Yes with my band pipes too I'd be fighting the instrument to force the drones down to 466. Those old Lawries just love playing 480+ with the drones way up on the hemp!

And trying to get a 480+...

Re: "B" Flat Set up

Yes indeed! Many years ago my Pipe Major and I had to play Anchors Aweigh for a US Navy event.

As it happens that tune fits perfectly on the Highland pipe scale- but in the key of G. The tune...

Re: Music for Pipes and other instruments

The thing is, in both Scottish and Irish traditional dance music the heart of the tradition is unison playing, so "multiple instrument voices" in the orchestral sense doesn't exist.

In Irish...

Re: An intriguing mention

All I see are rifles.

Those things are quite long, and when carried on the shoulder slope back very much like drones would.

Re: Pipe bag - Livingstone pattern

Ah, I see. Yes that would be the case if the bag got smaller in that inch between the normal drone spot and the further-forward drone spot.

Seems like using a smaller-diameter bag would be a...

Re: Hijaz scale, Israeli tunes

Yes I took music theory at university too... what I was alluding to is that people schooled in Western music, when confronted with Hijaz mode, invariably call it Harmonic minor. Same scale, different...

Re: Pipe bag - Livingstone pattern

Seems to me can create two scenarios:

1) if the bag remains in the same position under the arm, the chanter will be in the same position vis--vis the player as before, but the drones will be...

Re: Hijaz scale, Israeli tunes

Sorry I should have explained what the Hijaz Makam/Freygish/Ahava Rabboh scale on the Highland chanter consists of:

Low G, Low A, B flat, C sharp, D, E, F natural, High G, High A.

The notes in...

Hijaz scale, Israeli tunes

There are many more scales than the familiar Major, minor, Mixolydian, and so forth.

One is the scale called Hijaz Makam, Ahavah Rabboh, or Freygish.

It has a Major 3rd but a minor 2nd. The...

Re: David Lindsey Practice Chanter

A couple David Lindsey Practice Chanters showed up on Ebay.

I personally can't see paying $600 for a PC... that's as much as one of my sets of pipes cost, more than another set.

Re: "B" Flat Set up

Sounding in three flats, a Highland pipe chanter gives the key of E flat Major.

So if you're playing a full-scale Major tune (not a gap scale) then E flat is best, unless you want to play...

Re: Ratio of Harmony to Melody--Ideas

It's always an issue in pipe bands, how many pipers to assign to a harmony part- and my experience has been that it can sound different outside the circle than inside. I'll listen to a recording and...

Re: L&M Non-Zips - any left out there?

They come up, generally used, sometimes new, on Ebay fairly often.

The old-school plain L&M "elkhide" bags, I mean.

I picked up one a couple years ago and tied it into my backup set.

When...

Here's a comparison, it appears that the 1510 is a bit lighter than the im2500.

Re: Advice Needed - Replacement stocks

To me original stocks aren't much of a concern.

Yes when a bagpipe is made they come with stocks as part of the set, but a bagpipe normally also comes with a chanter, a blowpipe, a valve, a bag,...

Re: Advice Needed - Replacement stocks

But yes if you're splitting your stocks regularly it might be time for polypenco stocks!!

As mentioned above they're available from Ayrshire Bagpipes rather inexpensively.

A nice aspect of the...

Re: Do any museum specimens or other old pipes have a baritone drone?

This is a great topic, and I'm very interested to see if anything comes up.

I doubt it- in general ancient woodwinds don't survive, folk instruments even less so than chamber instruments.

Re: An version of Cabar Feidh (the march) from old military LPs

I listed to the first recording, and I'm with Calum, I hear the High A's in the first bar clearly. True they're quick! But in general they're really holding the dotted notes, that initial High G is...

Youngest bagpiper?

This kid has it all down!

Maybe underblowing the pipes a tad, but heck, the bag is as big as he is!
