Does anyone know if the Piping Centre is livestreaming the event again this year?

Re: Tired of the same old tunes at massed bands

The last time I was at Maxville, a few years ago, one of the waves, led by the RCMP, marched on, playing "79th's Farewell to Gibraltar". The other bands in the wave seemed to know the tune.

Later...

Re: The iconography of PM Evan MacRae

Looks like 4 Scots (Highlanders) pipers, besides wearing the Cameron of Erracht kilt, also wear the Gordon bag cover and MacKenzie pipe ribbon.

Re: Yanny or Laurel?

I understand that the sound clip has to be of a low quality before there can be ambiguity. If you clearly enunciate the words, people won't mistake one for the other. Our instrument lacks ambiguity....

Re: Well-known pipers who play easy reeds?

I have often felt that efficiency is the key word, meaning maximum vibrancy with minimum effort. It is one thing to have to huff and puff to get the thick blades going when the P/M hands you a 2x4,...

Re: College of Piping Gone - What about the tune books?

In its heyday, the CoP Piping Times was well nigh the official organ of the bagpiping scene. I am given to understand that it was the money maker - that and the green book. Went a long way in...

Re: McCallum Polypenco Chanters needed....

I believe they are readily available in the US.
Henderson Imports sells them. J. Higgins also lists them on his website.

Re: Pipes, A Serious Commitment…The Grumbles of a Newbie

Bruce Gandy is, of course, one of the world's best pipers.
Here's Mr. Gandy playing a set of MSR
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mo7W1GhEQTo

Like some other top pipers, he gives skype lessons....

Re: Pipes, A Serious Commitment…The Grumbles of a Newbie

I think it depends on the resources available at your location.

Many pipe bands have a few sets of bagpipes that new band members could use before they get their own sets. They usually provide...

Re: The Barbarrick Music Bagpipe Mute

I use it for:

Repetitive exercises and putting new tunes to the test on occasions when the practice chanter is usually called for. It gives me a better sense of what I can actually do on the...

Re: New set

6/8s are always fun.

But don't forget: "A Man's A Man for A' That" before Jan 25th! Maybe some other Robert Burns tunes too.

And then some jigs and Irish tunes before March 17th?

Re: Gift pipes - what would YOU do?

For me it's not about the legality of the ownership.

If I was a judge deciding the matter at small claims court, I would decide for the piper, no question about it.
If I was the piper with the...

Re: Gift pipes - what would YOU do?

I would give it back. Whoever owns it, it belongs to her.

Re: Practice chanter playing

I have taken to walking to work playing my Faegerstrom instead of driving. It's 45 minutes to an hour each way. It's great for memorizing tunes, and working on expression, and I am getting a lot of...

Re: How Sherlock Holmes detects the piper

Neil Munro!

And on the steering wheel.

I have noticed that if I spread my hands out on a surface, my right pinky bends a little more to the outside than the left one. I think that's from having...

Re: David Naill Pipes

I use Canning with my Naill. The drone sound is very nice to my ears. Easy to lock in too. I use MacPhee with my Naill chanter.

Re: Obama tartan

The Tartan Register web site gives a better idea of the colours. What appears to be black in the photo is actually navy blue.

Re: Recovery Time

Might be worth investing in a techno pipe or some kind of electronic chanter if you don't already have one. There is no blowing involved and it keeps the fingers going. You can keep up with the new...

Re: Practice - does even 10 minutes per day help?

You can practice when you are not on the pipes too.

Listening to recordings of good pipers is an important way to practice. It gives you a feel of how the music should flow and what a set of...

Re: Hard goose for happy neighbours?

I have an "official" mute. It's 20 inches by 12 inches. The foam part inside is about 16 inches, the extra 4 inches allow for the top to close around the neck when you pull the drawstring. It dampens...

Re: Rotting Hemp on Blowpipe

I use a Moose Valve and therefore take my blowpipe out frequently. I also tend to leave it out after a performance, and let it dry out in the case. Before I got into the habit, there had been...

Re: First ever public gig

For years I kept thinking it was "Orange and Blue/Louden's Bonnie Woods and Braes" for a group of Highland dancers at a school performance. But delving deep into my memory, it came to me that it was...

Re: Moose vs Naill Tube- Observations

I have used both. They have worked equally well for me. I prefer the Moose Valve, however. I have a sheepskin bag, and I am not a wet blower. I don't have to empty out the moisture that often. As far...

Re: Hello all! Please accept my apology NOW.

That would be my point precisely.

Many of us know about Donald MacPherson, who started on a set of bagpipes that cost £15. He played that set to near the end of his life. It is an ordinary set,...
