Bagpipes and Trumpet

A recording I heard decades ago suddenly came into my mind the other day, and try as I might I can't seem to find it on the interwebs.

I remember that it opened with acoustic guitar strumming,...

Re: Too Much Tape

Personally, I never ever take a blade, Dremel, etc to a chanter. That's just me, a lot of people do it, but I feel strongly about it because a change of reed brand/strength, etc can usually fix it,...

Re: Teachers and diaphragm vibrato

An uneducated guess: playing chanter is similar, sort of... in, "feel," anyway... to singing and vibrato when singing or playing practice chanter might make us feel a little more secure about tuning?...

Re: Bass Drone Tuning - Feeling the Vibrations

That's awesome, thanks for sharing- I'm definitely going to give it a try!

Re: Squealing/Double-Toning Low A

I'm no professor, but that sounds like a dying reed to me. I'd recommend trying a different reed.

To get a little more life out of your current reed you might try drying it out in the fridge over...

Re: Twist-Trap Practice Pipes

I haven't used them myself, but I'm curious: when you blow through the chanter, as a chanter, even though it's out of tune- is the sound consistent? I'm just wondering if the issue might be a...

Re: Child's practice chanter or standard?

Yeah, my suggestion is that if he can reach, go with standard. But if it's out of his reach, I'd put him on a child sized chanter. And I'd err on the side of caution, (favoring the smaller chanter) ...

Re: Bagpipe Humidification

I am no expert- but I've been playing the same set of blackwood pipes for about 15yrs - I'm in a mountain desert, humidity is zero. I've never needed to humidify, though. I thoroughly soak them in...

Re: LOUD Practice Chanter?

In my personal experience, long chanters are louder than standard in general. That might be the way to go if it's volume you're after.

You might also consider electronic bagpipes/chanters....

Re: Drone tuning Walsh poly small pipes

I'm no pro, but I think messing with the reeds is the way to go- if you've got to slide the drones out to the limit, then the first thing I'd do is open the tuning screw on the reed, making it...

Re: Backpack style pipecase

Cool case, I don't have anything to add, just commenting so I can see what others have to say. This is the first I've ever seen this one.

Re: metal ferrel cleaning

I use jewelry cleaner/shiner. I once put a buffer attachment on my Dremel to make it go a little quicker, (instead of using a rag)- it did work, but I got Silvo in my eye...

Re: Double Toning Drone Reed.

Disclaimer: I'm not a reed wizard, take this with a grain of salt.

When I've got students transitioning to pipes for the first time, I'll have them on just one drone with the others corked-...

Re: eBay 3/4 Set

I believe the reeds used and pressure applied would all be about the same, I think the purpose is for smaller people, (like children,) to be able to play at a younger age.

Though I could be wrong.

I haven't worn one since highschool, at which time I assumed that the reason they were worn was simply that a wool doublet and woolen socks weren't uncomfortable enough on their own...

Re: Bottom Zipper vs Side Zipper

I have a guess that the bottom zip might be cheaper because it runs along an existing seem, though that's just a guess.

As far as function goes, you'll probably be ok with either.

Re: Tenor Drone all of a sudden won't tune

Have you tried asking a bandmate to swap reeds with you? Just for a moment, so you can see what your drone does to another reed and what your reed sounds like in another drone...

Re: Circle measurements

Ha! At first glance I was thinking in imperial units, I thought we were talking feet instead of meters! That's a, "miniband," competition, for sure!

Re: Bass drones: world's observation.

I've heard a rumour, for which I have no evidence, that many top bands play with a cane reed in the bass done, even if the tenors are synthetic.

I sure don't know, but maybe that's true...
