Re: Security Tracking Devices

Actually, joking aside, I think I would actually go with some form of 'leash' if taking a valuable instrument on public transport. Preferably one that couldn't easily be cut or otherwise removed if I...

Re: Security Tracking Devices

Simple security device which means you won't need a tracker ..... a handcuff chained to your pipe case!

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

I must say that I don't have a problem with calling it plastic, resin, celluloid etc. The main thing for me is that it looks good and is well turned. Whether generated in a factory, a laboratory or...

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

What type of antler was used? I was speaking to my pipe making friend and he was saying he couldn't get Scottish deer antler of sufficient diameter for mounts.

Re: Hand turning

Very good! You make it look easy. I bet if I tried it there would be nothing but shards of wood everywhere

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

Personally I have five sets now and only one, a new set of Henderson PH01's in half engraved nickel have even imitation ivory.

I have to be honest and say that I regret buying the Hendersons as I...

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

I don't imagine it would be too hard to find Briar root in large enough pieces although I suspect it wouldn't be cheap given how much I typically paid for a good tobacco pipe made of it.

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

Do you think Briar root would make a good projecting mount material?

Until the start of this year I was a pipe smoker and I have to say I have always loved the honey coloured briar root of my...

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

When you say 'mounts are purely decoration' do you mean all mounts or just projecting mounts? Many years ago I recall seeing a set where a stock appeared to have expanded to the point where it...

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

I like those ones with the boxwood mounts, the second link didn't take me anywhere.

If I could ask you Riverside piper, what is the integrity of wood (boxwood, Coco-bolo, holly etc.) as a mounting...

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

I'm not really aware of what goes on in the pipe band scene. I assumed that uniformity would be the order of the day is this not the case? I know that, back in the day, I was the only tatty oik with...

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

Glad you like my pipes Pip01 I was over the moon when I saw the first photos of them coming together as I just requested a set of specs - plain turned but with a bead or two to break up the lines a...

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

I am surprised that there hasn't been more of a move to try and introduce other materials nowadays though. I get the sense, rightly or wrongly, that people in the main feel that the material should...

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

Greetings to you too Pip01

I have to admit that, being somewhat flamboyant in my tastes, I don't find ivory terribly exciting. In my latest set of pipes that I had made for me I opted for an...

Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

Hi all,

This is something that I have wondered about for some time now. Put simply I don't get all queasy about where ivory comes from but I really don't see why it's so highly prized, especially...

Re: Canmore zipper durability?

Oh since moving to the hybrids I wouldn't go back. They have that solidity under the arm of hide with the luxury of internal access and being almost maintenance free. What's not to love about them?

Re: Drone bell measuring

It wouldn't give you detailed measurements but you certainly could get an idea of shape using a cheap and cheerful "Multi-functional digital microscope". I have one that only cost about 10. It plugs...

Re: Canmore zipper durability?

That's good to know. I do have a couple of old canmores (green ones) but they couldn't be said to have much wear on them. One was from a set of Naill's I picked up that were put in the bag in 2004...

You used the same bag for ten years? I didn't think they had that sort of lifespan.

Re: Canmore zipper durability?

That's good to know. I have always thought of the zip as the most likely weak spot but I guess that, if these zips are designed for diving suits and I reckon at least most divers don't keep their...

Thanks for the information and advice. It is a TiZip and came supplied with tube of lube but you don't seem to get a great deal of lube in the tube.

Canmore zipper durability?

Hi all, I have to freely admit that, in the past I never used any moisture control in my canmore bags (the old green ones) and so only ever used the zipper to fit the stocks and retrieve lost drone...

Re: eBay Scammer, BEWARE - Henderson pipes

I have to say that I have never come across one with bagpipes before but I was part of a group of guitar enthusiasts who put pressure on ebay a while back about a guitar scam one. In that instance...

Re: eBay Scammer, BEWARE - Henderson pipes

I must admit that I am a bit non-plussed by the way this thread has turned. One user tries to let folks know that they run the risk of being robbed if they aren't careful and everybody jumps on him...
