Re: Synthetic Chanter Reed

I'm the reed consultant/distributor for bagpipe reeds for Légère. But there are no bagpipe reeds for sale yet. All initial retail sales and all trade sales and distribution will be done between...

Re: Old Hendersons, drone suggestions

It took a long time for me to learn this, but as a general rule, when you're not happy with your drones, focus on the bass. There are lots of great reeds out there today, and it's never been easier...

Re: Synthetic Chanter Reed

The concept comes obviously from the oboe, though I believe oboe reeds use cork rather than o-rings.

From our end, we also wanted an insertion principle that puts every reed in the exact same...

Re: Synthetic Chanter Reed

Patrick: Read my email above about the tests Willie McCallum and I did on the warming of reeds and chanters.

Having said that, even with cane reeds, the fact that a cane reed has to warm up is...

Re: Synthetic Chanter Reed

At present it bottoms out. That may or may not change. While the reed/chanter combo should be suitable for the highest levels as well, one of our initial goals is to simplify life for the unfortunate...

Hide key signature in Sibelius 7

Howdy Sibelius Users:

I'm finally moving on from Sibelius 6 to 7. In Sibelius 6, you can notate the tune in D-major, then when you are done you can hide the key signature, but the tune still plays...

Re: Synthetic Chanter Reed

No. That's one odd thing to get used to. With a cane reed you know it will generally ease up slightly in the first few minutes. With this one there is no variance in the strength over time.

Re: Synthetic Chanter Reed

Moisture has no effect on the reed at all. In terms of manipulating it, you can't: that's why it has to be perfect. That's why it needs its own chanter. We also need a way for people to order...

Two things:

1) I'm a Moderator here, and the Moderators are currently discussing closing this thread down because of the unpleasant direction it has taken. I'm going to try to get it back...

Re: Synthetic Chanter Reed

Just to clear up any misconceptions, I have been working with Guy Légère for about six years now on a synthetic chanter reed. Guy owns a company in Barrie, Ontario that has been making synthetic...

Re: Battle of the Somme, Scots Guards, Vol. 1

It's been pretty clearly established as a Willie Lawrie tune by the family, though there has been speculation that John McLellan of Dunoon actually gave the tune its title. I have the proper composer...

Re: Donald MacDonald pipes owned by Colonel Jack Churchill

I believe Churchill also had a set of full silver Robertsons. There was an article on them in the Piping Times 4 or 5 years ago. Owned now by a lady up Forres way.

Re: MacDougalls?

I'm a firm believer that if a vintage set can be put into playing condition while maintaining the integrity of the physical instrument, then it should be done so and played. Hearing the tone as it's...

Re: Pipes of War - published 1920

As I recall there were only 200 copies of this book printed at the time, and there was also a book of WW1 tunes that accompanied it. Very rare to find both. Beautiful book.

Re: PM Bill Livingstone's sound...

I'm pretty confident that Bill played a 1960s Hardie chanter on his WGP recording. Bill loved the old Hardie. We all did, and many of us -- myself, Colin MacLellan, John MacKenzie, Bob Worrall --...

Re: Dating Glen pipes

Insides only. The idea is to reduce the moisture absorption tendencies inside the drone. What cracks a drone is the inside absorbing moisture and swelling while the outside stays as is. The pressure...

Re: Old Better than New?

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, but one of the theories about why old drones tend to be superior to modern ones is that back then the ebony and cocuswood were coming from older, larger...
