Re: Did the Mayflower have any pipers aboard?

Speaking as a modern-day Puritan/Covenanter, this is an issue with which I have a great deal of experience. Even today, Puritans/Separatists, Covenanters, and Free Church Presbyterians do not use...

Re: modern timber analogues?

I cannot speak to mopane, but I can definitely tell you that cocobolo is a tremendous wood. Comparing two identically turned/bored sets of MacLellan drones--one in ABW and one in Cocobolo--the...

Re: Scots Guards Book III

"SS" in this context refers to "Standard Settings" [hence "SSI, II, and III"]. Conversely, one could just as correctly annotate "SGI, II, II" in reference to "Scots Guards I, II, and III". It has...

Re: Regarding the Naill Chanter

I have personally been impressed with every iteration of the Naill chanter (ABW only...not that the polys aren't just as good, I've just never tried one). My personal solo chanter--for me the...

No American Legion or VFW pipers that I know of...especially considering that only a few American servicemembers ever even wear a pith helmet while on active duty--and that only in specific billets! ...

Re: appropriate wearing of pith helmets

In addition to the historical context, pith helmets are still worn on rifle/pistol ranges by shooting officials (block officials and coaches). What's that got to do with piping? IMHO, if more pipe...

Re: Trying to lower band pitch

Roddy MacLellan actually makes the chanter, called the "Gael," to Jim's specifications. It pitches very nicely between 468 and 472. Another idea (and one that my band is experimenting with) is...

Re: Sick of Hearing the Same Medley Two Years in a Row?

Re: How many reeds have you ruined?

If there is anything that I've mastered over the past 30 years of piping, it's reed destruction! In fact, I've grown to think of non-reed-destroyers as a rather odd lot. Take for instance a fellow...

Re: Ebony stocks?

Hi, Pip:

I know that a lot of the older makers made pipes with whatever wood was on hand. At the time you're talking about, cocuswood was the "cheap stuff." [Boy, would I love a time machine....]...
