Re: Selecting Band Tunes
I think any PM that doesn't consider the band's playing level is setting himself up for trouble.
Years ago I attended a practice of a Grade 3 band and they handed out a tune of a very high level...

Re: Selecting Band Tunes
I do to. It amazes me how many pipers are key-deaf, and will put together a set of three 4/4s all in A Major.
Or three sets of three 4/4s all in A Major.
I understand the thinking, which...

Re: Calling Doon the Line
The tune is a bit like How Great Thou Art, going down to the 3rd and going up to the 3rd.
Tunes like that just can't be fit onto the pipes in the normal keys used on the pipes, D Major or A...

Ebay photo: PM John Massey
Interesting that this photo pops up on Ebay from time to time.

Re: Calling Doon the Line
Worked out enough to see that it's a far greater range than the Highland pipes.
The first phrase stays within an octave, but it's where the octave sits on the scale, the lowest note being the 3rd...

Re: Changing birl style
It didn't change the sound at all. I scooped out a concavity around each of the bottom few holes, but these concavities only went maybe a third of the way into the wood. So the sound came out of the...

Re: Info on MacPherson pipers
One thing that may or may not be any help is the Clan MacPherson Museum which has several relics of MacPherson pipers.
They have, as I recall, the Brooch, Dirk, and Sporran awarded to Angus "Cam"...

Re: Calling Doon the Line
I just now looked on Youtube, I can't find anybody playing it on pipes.
From the vocals it would be easy enough to transcribe.
Only after transcribing it will I know whether or not it fits on...

Re: Tunes you absolutely HATE!
As a former Scottish Country Dancer, it's an exciting moment when you're dancing the Strathspey and at a given moment the band pops into the reel version of the same tune.
What's functioning...

Re: Thistle ghillies fit problem
They sound like they would fit my feet perfectly.
Obviously the pair of Avriels I had weren't that style, they were more constricting that most shoes my size.

Re: Thistle ghillies fit problem
Those are two different brands. Thistle Shoes are, I believe, Scotland's largest maker of Ghillies brogues. When I go into a shop or see Ghillies online nine times out of ten they're Thistle Shoes...

Re: Thistle ghillies fit problem
Ha! The Thistle Ghillies in question are 14UK.
I usually wear a 14US, and generally 13UK is fine for me. But with Thistle brand Ghillies the 13UK is too tight which is why I rolled the dice on...

Re: Thistle ghillies fit problem
Oh yes. Even with all the laces completely loose the shoes were still too tight around the middle of my feet.
Where they're tight is across the top, at mid-foot. With most shoes a D (regular)...

Re: Ebay stuff #2,467
Actually both Highland sets I currently own were bought on Ebay.
Both from the same seller, a person of honesty and integrity, who puts up great pipes at very reasonable prices from time to time.

Thistle ghillies fit problem
I know many pipers' reaction will be "tell me something I don't know!" but for me it's an outlier.
My first two pair of Ghillies, bought in 1977 and 1986, were Keltic brand and were incredibly...

Re: Changing birl style
I don't know if this has ever been an issue for anybody else, but I was having troubles because the hole spacing and sizing on my practice chanter was so different from that of the big-hole chanters...

Re: Tunes you absolutely HATE!
OMG I hate hearing that tune!
Once again it's a situational hate.
The situation is being at a Highland Games in the area where all the band-tents are and always ALWAYS there's some bad piper...

Re: Squeezing w/Shoulder & Back
Gold Medallist James McColl spoke once of playing the pipes "like a flute".
Watching him, it appeared that he was blowing long and gently into the bag, only having the bag take over when he took...

Re: Drone plugs/corks for Kitchen Pipes
I made sets of stoppers for my uilleann pipes and smallpipes.
What I did was buy a package of soft pipe-cleaners (not the kind with scratchy wires) and a package of craft beads, gold, that had...

Re: Someone must know this tune...
For sure, it's why I perform it on uilleann pipes. It sounds good on those, right in the uilleann pipes' wheelhouse actually.
I've never been required to perform it on GHB, if so I would probably...
