Re: Balance Tone VS. BT High Resonance Drone Reeds

Iím guessing the USA set is the same as the regular reeds, just in red, white, and blue.

Re: Head shakers

A DM doesnít mean great musicianship. One of my piano professors couldnít find beat 1 on a metronome.

Re: Head shakers

I used to teach the pipe and at a local high school. The pipe band would accompany the marching band for parades and the assistant director would always say to me ďhave them play that one bagpipe...

Re: Chanter reeds, what makes good, what makes bad?

Re: Who makes this reed?

I started a thread a while back (http://forums.bobdunsire.com/forums/showthread.php?t=167679) that linked to a video that explains how we settled on A440 in the classical world and quite a few people...

Re: Anyone know these pipes, wood? Maker?

If youíre happy with how they look and, more importantly, how they sound, then screw what other people say.

Re: Anyone know these pipes, wood? Maker?

Thatís a bold statement considering people like Ringo and Jim McGillivray are regular contributors to this forum.

Re: Chanter reeds, what makes good, what makes bad?

Arundo Donax is a non-native, invasive species in North America and, at least here in San Diego, is seen as a pest to be removed.

Re: Bit of a 'crack' problem needing some advice please

This.

When I got my pipes, I specified a poly blowpipe and stock when they would normally be wood. Now that’s standard for many makers, including the one who made my pipes.

Re: Chanter reeds, what makes good, what makes bad?

That’s interesting. One of my professors in college who is a professional oboe player said she harvested some cane when she moved to San Diego to make reeds but found it to be wholly unsuitable for...

Re: Low G won't sharpen

I havenít noticed it making any difference to other notes on my chanter, but YMMV.

Like Twitchy said above, play LG and slowly slide the bell along your knee closing off some of it to see what it...

They look kinda like Robertson pipes, before the mounts went way oversized.

Re: Mini MSR competition. Something I'd like to see.

WUSPBA just got rid of their G4 Mini MSR for bands this season. Granted it was 4 parts march, which could be 1x4 parter or 2x2 parters, 2 parts strathspey, and 2 parts reel.

The RSPBA G4A for...

Re: Low G won't sharpen

Before undercutting the holes, try the tape across the bell. Iíll try to get a pic of what I did. It shouldnít work, but it does.

Re: Your 2019 setup?

Ainít that the truth.

The day before my first performance on pipes, my then sort of instructor decided to adjust my drone reeds because SM90 tongues are supposed to be a specific length and mine...

Re: Low G won't sharpen

Put some tape across the very bottom of the chanter (at the bell, not the tone holes) at the edge. Sounds counterintuitive to use tape to sharpen a note, but it works.

Re: Better teaching methods?

My band has a packet that we hand out to beginners.

I make sure students get the basics down (good finger position, able to go up and down the scale, with and without grace notes) before moving...

Re: Problems with High A?

Because of the conical bore of the chanter HA will naturally be quieter than the other notes and LG will be louder. If itís in tune, I wouldnít worry about it.

Re: What does your band do for fun outside of playing?

At the end of the competition season we have a ceilidh (used to be a more formal ball but had a hard time attracting enough people I guess) and get ready for the next season which starts a few months...

Re: Water bottles and camelpacs

I think a Camelbak would get a bit annoying while trying to play pipes.

In our Fourth of July parade, I hung a regular water bottle from a strap on a carabiner from one of my sporran strap loops....
