Re: Advice for a Beginner Smallpiper?

GHB sheet music can certainly be played, but if you're brand new to it all, it can be a bit of a challenge learning to ignore all the GHB gracings. And you do want to do that.

May I suggest the Facebook group "Musette Enthusiasts."

Re: Swedish somethings on eBay?

Sorry, but I'm not seeing the nail-in-the-stock that's being referred to. Can somebody point it out to me?

Re: Bellows stiff

I just sold a McCallum bellows. I think they will always be stiffer than most any other bellows, even broken in.

Re: Two Newbie SSP, Questions Please

Whatever you unplug, be sure you're not exposing the valve. It needs to stay in the bag so it's protected. I know of no builder whose pipes aren't designed to do this.

Re: Simon Hope Smallpipes

" . . . air leaks back which it should not."
I would suggest using mineral oil rather than vaseline. Keeps the leather supple, and less likely to get gummy.

Re: Decent Smallpipe Bellows Makers

Whenever anybody complains about their pipes taking too much air, the first thing I always address is the blowpipe check valve. I find it's the culprit more often anything else -- maybe more than...

Re: Drones on shoulder

I play a set of Jon Swayne's low D border pipes. The drones are massive. I often find it more comfortable to play with them over my bag-side shoulder, since there is less torque on the bag. I also...

Re: Self Evaluation

For an even more real-time self-evaluation, the Fagerstrom electronic chanter is also an unforgiving master. You will hear errors while playing it that you won't hear on the chanter. And you will...

Re: Northumbrian Pipes

a) Learn to work the bag and bellows first. Close all but one drone, pick a note on the chanter, and practice until you can keep a steady note coming out of it. Then learn to do it with two drones...

Re: Tying in chanter stock to hide bag

"the part of the bag is too wide to tie around the groove"

I noticed this comment you made. You're not expecting the chanter stock to fit snugly into the neck of the bag, are you? Take a look at...

Re: Gun drill vs. D-bit

a) How much do you want to spend? Gun drills ain't cheap.
b) I avoid Zarb's problem by ALWAYS comparing the length of the wood to the length of the drill, and wrapping a piece of blue tape around...

Re: got hemp

Teflon tape has a tendency to split apart after much use. It's really intended to fill a gap between non-moving parts and stay there, and doesn't hold up to stress and strain. Waxed sewing thread...

Re: Electronic NSP

CalumII and I are now in total agreement! Thanks for the clarification.

What I will say is that the finger holes are different on every single set of pipes you'll play, and it takes a while to be...

Re: Electronic NSP

I would respectfully disagree with CalumII. I find that the Fagerstrom is actually LESS forgiving of careless fingering than a real chanter. A number of other posters on this forum and elsewhere...

Re: Hemping small pipes

If I read the OP correctly, the common stock came out of the bag. This is not about wrapping a joint, it's about tying the stock back into the bag. This is a lot trickier than just hemping (and a...

Re: Taking The Plunge...

How to case & carry the bellows may be the single largest reason to go with mouth-blown pipes. I think we all live with the fear that the bellows are going to damage the pipes somehow. And the case...

Re: Lowland Pipe Gracing

I find ANY gracenote that is done too frequently becomes loud and chirpy. OMO.

I would also say that I find I use taps more often than they are used in GHB. Again, largely my personal taste, but...

Re: Thoughts on low D Smallpipes

I have a set of Jon Swayne's low D border pipes. The volume is somewhere between a smallpipe and many other border pipes. I think it would work well in a session. The bass drone is such a lovely...

Re: Making Border Chanter Reed Adjustments

I have to ask: which is the bigger risk, getting the reed damp from a quick mouth blow, or damaging it getting it in and out of the stock?

Fear of death

My greatest fear is that when I die, my wife will sell all my pipes for what I told her I paid for them!

Naugahyde?

(I posted this in the Facebook group, but I want the opinions of those who don't read that.)
OK, I know it lacks the cachet of true leather, but from a purely pragmatic standpoint, what are people's...
