Re: Help identityfying my pipes

Despite the slight differences in tuning chambers and scribe lines I also believe these are Robertsons. I don't know of any other pipe maker who made mounts like that.

Re: Playing before a Wedding

Yeah, I totally get that way too, but for gigs I relax my standards a bit, you kind of have to if you're going to keep doing them and stay sane.

I've only ever played one gig I really was not...

Re: Playing before a Wedding

Dave, when I do gigs where I can't tune I do a "cold tune".

Pop your chanter in without touching the reed in any way, strike in and tune as fast as you can. Then take the chanter out and put a...

Re: Polishing and sealing old nickel ferules

The best thing I've found for quick and easy polishing are these:

They work very very well and last a long time. They work great on...

Re: Old "paper clip trick" for cane drone reeds

The paper clip trick has been around as long as I've been piping at least, so since about 1987 probably much earlier as it was a pretty common technique even back then.

There is no harm in...

Re: What PC reeds do you like?

In my opinion nothing really compares to Walsh reeds for plastic pc reeds. I've been playing the same one for over 10 years and it still sounds fantastic in my long Naill pc.

Re: A chanter for smallpipes with normally spaced holes?

I play a set of smallpipes that I made and I used a Gibson Fireside chanter in A, the reach is slightly longer than a regular Bb practice chanter but not too bad.

Re: Chanter Reed setup

Regarding wetting a reed or not.

This is really all down to the reed in question.

Some reed makes really love moisture, such as thick bladed reeds (I'm not going to mention any particular reed...

Re: Reeds for new Macraes drones

A good friend of mine has a set, they are quite spectacular if I may say so.... he's getting a very good sound out of them with Rocket reeds as well as Kinnairds, both regular and the Evolutions.

Re: Tying-in Cord - Waxed Polyester or Nylon

With regard to nylon vs polyester you'd be better getting nylon for sure.

Nylon is stronger in tensile strength compared to polyester by size and also nylon does not stretch as much. I'm sure...

Re: EZ Drone reverse bass

Ezeedrone reeds have been around a very long time as we all know, and their tenor reeds seem to have been the standard almost from the time the company released them, many playing Ezee tenors and a...

Re: Reed recommendations for ebony Lawries

I have 1905 ebony Lawries and I've found Kinnairds work really well in them. I like both the original or Evolution, either are great.

If you like a very bold harmonic sound then I highly...

Re: Poly or Blackwood Chanter, Can you hear the difference?

I think drones influence the chanter more than the reverse but there is still an impact on both.

Here are some interesting experiences I've had with different drones over the years.

1. Naill -...

Re: Poly or Blackwood Chanter, Can you hear the difference?

Interesting post ^^

Chanter harmonics interact with drone harmonics. I agree that in the two recordings the chanters may sound very similar but the drones sound quite different. I believe this to...

Crisler blowpipes still exist! In case any one on here wasn't aware, after Mr. Crisler retired he sold the blowpipe business to David Lindsey the pipe maker.

He's on Facebook, just look up his...

Re: C- and F-Natural: Chanter or reed dependent?

I honestly haven't done enough research regarding ABW vs. Poly with the same chanters to know for sure, but I will say that the few I have multiples of seem to react the same regardless of material. ...

Re: Sheepskin brand?

I typically get 4 to 5 years out of a Begg sheepskin bag. I've used other bags as well with similar results. The key is not letting it stay damp for too long. Sheepskin takes on a lot of moisture,...

Re: C- and F-Natural: Chanter or reed dependent?

I've found what seems to be a pattern, very dependent on the reed for the most part, that seems to produce good C and F naturals. If a reed is very free blowing and has a very vibrant top hand then...

Re: Dating Interesting Set of Bagpipes

1970's Lawries are my guess. Based on the profile and the curve of the bell. Also in later years Lawrie used less beads such as what your pictures show. I could be wrong, better full on pictures...

Re: Advice on Reproductions

Look up and friend request Jori Chisholm on FB, he deals in Atherton bagpipes a lot and I'm sure he'll be able to find you a set at a reasonable price.
