Re: Impossible birls on Peter Henderson plastic chanter

The problem you're having with the cross-fingered notes might be that the reed which worked well one chanter doesn't quite work with the other. I have experienced that with some reeds which won't...

Re: What tune never gets old to you?

The Lark In The Clear Air, played as a slow air, with variations each time through. Lovely tune and good for checking intonation and the high B.

On some smallpipes, you can remove the middle section of the bass drone and set that now two-section drone to D, effectively becoming a bass drone for the D chanter. You may also be able to tune...

When I started learning to play pipes 40 years ago, I found my experience as a tubist very useful- not just for reading the music, but for breath support.

Re: Ridge or straight cut, which to you prefer?

I prefer straight-cut reeds as they're easier to adjust for strength and tuning by scraping or sanding. That said, I have had good results with some ridge-cut reeds as well.

Re: GHB reed in bombarde

You might want to ask this in the "Other pipes" forum. Some of the pipers there also play in Breton type bands and my also play bombarde or know someone who does.

Re: How is this piper achieving these notes?

Well, those raised fourths would of course appear in the melodies, but as Calum explained, they are there as part of a secondary harmony function, usually a V of V ( or V7 of V) chord progression (...

Re: Ackland 480 Drone Reeds - Play Test, Comparison, & Review!

FWWI, I found the 466 version too robust for my pipes, but I play two sets at about 466 with fairly light chanter reeds. I think they's be killer band reeds, just not suited for what I do.
