I’ve used a 1/2 BB size ~1\16” ball of Blu-Tak mashed flat on to the reed tongue. Play around for the size that meets your needs.

On the other hand,...there are plenty of good+ Pipers who can’t....and do study an unknown piece on the practice chanter to ‘get it’...then knowledgeably progress towards a desirable tempo.

Bands already draw which set they must play...of those they’ve spent a year practicing.
if you’re meaning they suddenly might need to play and perfectly stitch together an MSR of random tunes......
