Without geeking out too, too much on oil and the fat breakdown that causes them to go bad, when the oil is within the cells of the wood, they are interacting in a positive way and the oil is not...

For stability of the wood and to prevent elongation of bores etc... almond oil or the secret formula of the Bore Doctor which even Ringo recommends (good enough for me!)
