Gordon Mooney Books

A few days ago I dug into my music collection and pulled out the books
published by Gordon decades ago. Strapped on the border pipes and reacquainted myself, after many years away, with those...

Re: Garvie Border Pipes

Recently I've been experimenting with various bridle settings on my border chanters. I am amazed at how the slightest tweaks, i.e. open vs. closed, can make a huge difference in sound, stability,...

Re: Worst Advice Ever?

Why is this bad advice? Countless pipers out there, myself included, can often benefit by slowing down.

Re: Worst Advice Ever?

There are many instances where this advice makes sense. Perhaps you were “crushing” a particular ornament? My former instructor is very fine piper and teacher in the Northeast US. Indeed a legend....

Re: What tune never gets old to you?

Great, great tune. But it’s “Steward”, not “Stewart”. :)

Re: Startup question about small pipes

Today I was adjusting the bridle on my border pipe reed to address some minor issues, and I was struck with the significant differences resulting from very small adjustments. You may well need to...

Re: Startup question about small pipes

It appears the 3 Henderson videos are addressing GHB reeds. I would ignore most of it, maybe even all of it. Indeed, some it would harmful. Unless you know exactly what you are doing, don’t...

Re: eBay Irish smallpipes

I also find the drones to have a somewhat thin, harsh, metallic sound. Perhaps it's just the recording, but it doesn't appeal.

Re: Favourite chanter pitch

Upon retirement 8 years ago from the Grade III band I was competing with, I went back to my Hamish Moore concert Bb chanter. Love it.

Re: Pipers in The Royal Tank Corps

Not exactly on point, but I was traveling over Christmas and stopped in for a snack at McDonald's. Man, mid-90s, sitting there having lunch, with a WWII Veteran hat on. As I always do these days, I...

Not HM pipes. Perhaps one of the chanters.

Re: Wedding dilemma

In addition to what others have pointed out, I would add that it's important to understand how the emotion of the moment can, literally, impair your ability to play. Years ago I was asked to play...

Re: Pipe Tunes for the Season

The classic Charles Wesley hymn “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus” is beautiful on the pipes.

Re: Forum activity levels

But I wonder if it's worth revisiting now. Surely there's a middle ground. For example, you are allotted no more than --- number of name changes?

Re: Forum activity levels

A couple of thoughts.

First, other forums, e.g. thesession.org, allow for a change of names. The posts don't disappear, but simply appear under a different name. For reasons having nothing to do...

Re: Listen to this

I think Calum and J.R. have it exactly right.

I recently went through the Ceol Sean collection looking for old strathspeys rarely or uncommonly heard anymore. Took me several weeks, and I...

Re: Kilts and proper kilts, Oy vey ist meir....

The attraction, for many of us, has always been the music, first and foremost. It is, indeed, I think an odd comment to wonder "what the attraction is in the first place." If the Victorian...

Re: Current Obsession w/Kantara to El Arish

Patrick -

Thanks for the reply. You may well be correct. But I'm not completely convinced it's a typo, given that Fergussan wrote it and it is in the Fergussan collection. And the E works.

Current Obsession w/Kantara to El Arish

I am rediscovering Kantara to El Arish. Brilliant, brilliant tune.

I have a question about just one note, but I think it actually makes a difference in the feel of the tune. In the 1939...

Re: Who makes this reed?

When I first started competing more than 15 years ago, I used the concert Bb chanter that came with the concert Bb set made by Hamish Moore. I was marked down for having a "dull" "unpleasant" sound...

Rob Crabtree Smallpipe Question

Interesting discussion going on over at session.org. According to one individual, on Rob's first CD, the small pipe tracks appear to be sounding in Eb, as in an Eb set of pipes. A half-tone higher...
