Re: Your own funeral

Since we don't have music at the actual burial, or in the 7-day mourning period, in our tradition, this is for afterward, maybe after one month. The tune may be a little too mournful for some, but in...

Re: Ratio of Harmony to Melody--Ideas

Hah--those Bs and low Gs were selected to give that double low eructus! I often compose melody and harmony together, and in fact let the two voices fall over each other. A complex melody formed of...

Ratio of Harmony to Melody--Ideas

I cannot imagine a single rule, other than musicality. Good musicians do not always agree on that, either. But ideas, opinions, experiences...?

I have played 1:1 with a strong chanter reed, and a...

Re: The Art of the 6/8 March

Interesting, Matthias...

Certainly the overly clipped and overly fast formula playing turns strong melodies into pulsed tone rows.

Re: How many actually use Binneas

I do, but I haven't competed in over 35 years, so, I am untested with Binneas settings. I have no fondness for the tropical fruit colours, or the absconded staff. I do very much like the good show...

Re: More than one bass..?

Was there not some experimentation with two bass drums in bands, at least some kind of attempt, a few years back?

They make elephants with naugahyde and Polypenco tusks now. Problem solved.

Re: 6/8 Jig Composition: Thoughts?

It has a nice structure. Loosen it up a bit, and it might flow better as a jig. However, I'd keep melodically strategic dots and cuts. It is quite nice--and not always easy--to have a combination of...

Re: CelticPipes melody/harmony out of sync

Thanks for the reply--it helps.
With arrangements and counter melodies often quite sophisticated these days, any programme claiming to handle harmony should have stayed in the shop until it could...

CelticPipes melody/harmony out of sync

Can anyone help me figure out why the playback of melody and harmony is out of sync on CelticPipes? I checked for the obvious, like note values/parallel bars being off in count. It is almost always...

Re: Competing without bag cover?

Lots of nekked bags in my day, before the synthetics. Mostly the L&M Elk tanned Cow skin bags. Never heard a word about it as a concern for a judge. Their purview was music. No official games dress...

Re: Are you an audiophile/or do you find sound fascinating?

Ever since hearing some of the most beautiful note sequences in traditional Japanese music as a young child, I have been fascinated with sound and how it can stimulate intellectual response....

Re: 'Wet' vs 'Dry' blowers - a myth?

Touché

Since the matter of moisture in the pipes, on the reeds, has never been a myth, moisture management is the essential heart of the matter for most pipers, and not the precise physiological...

Re: Yanny or Laurel?

We prefer to stay up all night and end up WITH the answers. Now, as a purely physics problem, the Yanny/Laurel matter has some merit. Then when played backward it is bound to yield further evidence...

Re: Yanny or Laurel?

Never heard of this business. Something else from the West that I am missing out on in the East, like Haggis, poutine, and Big Macs.

What else are those Reptilians in the Mother Ship denying us?

Re: Grrrr. Pipe failure at memorial service!

You were completely up for the performance. An unusual problem is just luck of the draw. Regrettable, but essentially unavoidable. We've all got one or two of those stories. Totally prepared, yet...

Re: What is the longest time you have played without stopping?

Yes to sheepskin, though I did also use L&M elk-tanned cowhide on some of my pipes.

My clothing smelled like Airtight and sheep lanolin back then.

Re: What is the longest time you have played without stopping?

An hour or more--in very dry weather, but blowing in a lot of moisture into the bag. Four decades ago, and more, when I lived to pipe. Never used moisture control devices.

Re: 1953: Pipe Band passes on Lawrie pipes for pipes from Pakistan!

Well, these Asian pipes have been exported into the Middle East for decades, helping to stymie the development of tone and tuning skills of many a would-be piper. But I have noticed a trend toward...

Re: Let's see your ink!

Israelis were, anciently, and today are still forbidden from marking their bodies. And since, in the Bible it says Mashi'akh did not, in physical appearance, stand out in a crowd and would have to be...
