Re: Your 2019 setup?

I'll share a bit of wisdom I learned this summer at piping school:

"If it's going, and it's going well, don't f*#% about with it."

Re: Bass drone goes out of tune quickly

I removed some tiny burrs where the nose cone goes in and underneath the blade. I also added some hemp on the joints just to make sure they were air tight and made sure the reed was seated tight. ...

Re: Peaks and valleys of the learning process

I was chatting with someone today about piping frustrations and his advice was to just let go. Stop trying to be in control. Even with diligent practice, fingers and brains will progress at their own...

Bass drone goes out of tune quickly

Hi all, hopefully someone can help me. My tenor drones stay in tune with the chanter and with each other pretty well (Selbie). However my bass drone always seems to need to be tuned (kinniard...

Re: Most frequent/overplayed tunes for solo competitions

Not sure about light music, but at one competition I must have heard the piob "Glengarry's Lament" at least a half dozen times by players in both Grade 3 and 2.

Re: Controlling nerves

Have you tried talking to your band mates about your problem? Just being open and honest with them is likely to ease your nerves a bit. And unless they're complete jerks, people enjoy helping others...

Re: Las Vegas

I assume you mean bands? Pasadena Scots took first in both Grade 3 MSR and Medley. I believe Phoenix came in second overall.

Exercise sheets - good or bad?

Hello all. What's the consensus on using exercise sheets to practice? Some big name pipers seem to consider them boring and a waste of time while others recommend them. I don't mind the boring bit,...

Polished drone bores?

Tonight I found an old bagpipe instruction/maintenance book I had and one of the things it mentioned was that drone bore roughness would disrupt the sound waves and create a rough tone. The author...

Re: Teachers and diaphragm vibrato

Can someone explain how vibrato is produced on the bagpipe? I know it can't be from the breath.

Re: Teachers and diaphragm vibrato

Vibrato is ingrained in our musical culture. Listen to any professional singer or solo instrumentalist and you hear it. It adds life and richness to the tone. So it may come automatically from us...

Re: Synth bass reed suggestion

I'm glad to hear someone else mention this issue! My tenors would do that with Ezeedrone reeds. Tried two different sets. I'd get the drone almost in tune and then it would change pitch. Thought I...

Amateur Contests on West Coast

Hey, just wondering what are some of the best games to compete at on or near the West Coast. I live in Los Angeles, so Queen Mary, Costa Mesa, Ventura are the only ones I know. I'm willing to...

Re: "B" Flat Set up

When I say "A 440" I mean concert A. So then the concert B flat (Chanter's low A) should be at 466.

Re: Tying in a new bag

Thanks again all. It's all moot at this point. Without going into the long, frustrating story, I had sent my stocks to someone in Canada to tie in a bag, but due to the high customs/UPS fees I...

Re: Synth bass reed suggestion

I had a L&M hide bag. Now going with a goatskin bag. I'm thinking maybe the cane reed I have isn't the best. I got it at a highland games and it was literally the only one they had. But it has...

Re: "B" Flat Set up

Kenny, thanks for the video, it was a great idea! Looks very easy switching to A 440 compared to having to take reeds out to install the traditional drone extenders. I'm sold!

Re: Tying in a new bag

Thanks all for the suggestions. I'd love to have someone show me how to do it but I'm not in a band and I take Skype lessons. I'll ask around and see if maybe there's someone local.

I used to...

I've decided to get a new hide pipe bag (goatskin) and will need to learn to tie it in. I've done some reading and watched some videos and think I'm ready to tackle this daunting task. Just wanted to...

Re: Good transition practice

For crossing noises, here's something you could try from the strathspey Islay Ball. Hopefully my notation will make sense:

Re: Good transition practice

I'd echo what others have said, play slowly when you practice. There are a ton of free crossing noise (CN) exercises to be found on Google, but none will help you if you aren't playing them...

Re: Third time..crash and burn

Welcome to the bagpipe! It's a frustrating, temperamental instrument. Glenfiddich champions have trouble with their pipes and with nerves. But, the payoff for all that hassle is worth it because...

Re: Drone reeds "double toning"?

My tenor would always double tone with ezzedrones. Got a new set of them, same problem. Got a set of Selbies and viola, no double tone.

Yes, feel encouraged. Cane isn't as difficult as you...
