Re: Smallpipes with separate, over-the-shoulder drones

That's my favourite configuration too: mouthblown with drones in separate stocks.

All the major Highland pipemakers (Henderson, Glen, etc) used to make them, in the 19th century price-lists they...

Re: Best Chanter and Drone Tuner for Band?

BTW I mentioned above using the normal cheap Korg tuner for the drones.

Now I'm agreeing with others who have said it's not accurate enough, because yesterday I was testing the scale of one of my...

Re: Where to buy gortex gaita bags

I just ordered one direct from Canmore.

They say they get to the USA in just a few days. We shall see.

Thanks! Richard

PS Iain at Canmore says they make a number of different sizes of...

Re: Best Chanter and Drone Tuner for Band?

Our PM has been using the Braw Tuner app on his phone and it's the best thing I've seen for tuning chanters.

It's not like anything else I've seen. It doesn't have a needle that changes while you...

Re: Using a Little Mac blowstick valve on smallpipes

I have Lil' Mac valves on my smallpipes, and on my uilleann pipes!

They just work.

(But I use the Moose on the fullsize Highland pipes.)

Re: Piper's Pinkie

I had to look up Edgewood. Wiki says the population is 43.

Question: does Edgewood have the highest percentage of pipers per capita of any town in the world?

Los Angeles could field three...

Re: Queen's Piper on hiatus

That was my first thought: how many serving and ex-army Pipe Majors are there in the London area? Any of whom could do a fine job.

It appears that the Queen doesn't want a temporary piper but...

Re: Queen's Piper on hiatus

Reading between the lines, I like the fact that the Queen is actually listening to the tunes being played! For her the piping isn't background noise, which is how most people experience music...

Re: Where to buy gortex gaita bags

Bringing this topic up again because I have a Spanish wedding I'm piping at coming up and I need a gaita bag.

I'm reaching out to Canmore in Scotland to find out their estimated delivery time.

Re: Waltzing Matilda

Waltzing Matilda mostly fits on the GHB, to match the real tune you'd need to play High G sharp in a couple places, and there's a short passage you have to play an octave up.

Re: Wanted: tone-hole spacing for Robert Burns' stock-and-horn

There's a pipemaker in central California who makes those, Brian Steeger.

I don't see them on his site now but I'm pretty sure his site used to offer them.

About the hole-spacing, on many...

Re: Make and value?

I was able to see them but the posts I saw didn't shed definitive light on the maker. About value, it's whatever they sold for, which isn't mentioned.

They looked to be a new set with drone tops...

Re: Favourite note?

Well now, that depends on the drones!

Two vintage pipes I'm currently playing I was drawn to due to the wonderful striking harmonics the drones produced when I play F. (I've had pipes which did...

Re: Roddy MacLeod High-A

I play sheepskin here in Southern California and so do a number of other pipers I know and they work great.

I do keep the bag (with only the drone standing sections left in the stocks) in a trash...

Re: Why an inverted bass drone Reed?

I looked up the old threads on inverted bass reeds (this seems the most recent) because I recently got a new EzeeDrone inverted bass and was disappointed in its tone and volume- far less volume and...

Re: More than one bass..?

I would like to hear that, if anyone can link to a video.

Bass drums tuned to Bb and Ab, in ordinary music terms. So many Highland pipe tunes are based around that "A-G-A" chord progression.

Re: Balance Tone B Flat Drone Reed?

As I've mentioned before I play in 466 regularly and my most recent solution has been to have a set of pipes that wants to play there naturally.

This IMHO works better than trying to wrangle a...

Re: Which pipemaker in these vintage photos?

I've found the attributions on the reverse of vintage press photos sold on Ebay are frequently incorrect.

Not that this one is! But they often are, so I take them with a grain of salt, and set...

Re: When the Battle's O'er - How many verses?

I can't recall instrumental tunes being counted in verses.

Because if we're thinking of the vocal piece it's not just verses, but verses and choruses, and instrumental bits as well, for example a...

Re: Shouldn't there be threads??

For sure there are various issues that can happen with poly pipes and poly chanters, due to the slick (almost oily) nature of the plastic.

I've had the thing happen on the tenon of a poly chanter...

Re: Tenor Drone all of a sudden won't tune

Just asking, do you know it was done after it left the workshop? Or is it possibly original?

Because a number of the oldest sets I've owned had different internal specs on the two tenors, one...

Re: Piping at funerals

At least around here it works like the film music industry: there's a "first call" person, then on down the list.

Each cemetery or mortuary has a list of pipers, and they're usually called in the...
