Re: The ubiquitous tuning Catch-22 of pipers

I agree with Richard regarding "on the fly" drone tuning.

As for chanter tuning, here is what has worked well for me when playing/performing for only a short length of time (one or two tunes): In...

Re: Who's using abcm2ps on a Mac?

Good job Andrew. You came up to speed on compiling and package building very quickly.

Who knew those programming classes from 20 years ago would come in handy after all this time? ...

Some well-established commercial music OCR programs are:

Re: Grade One Qualifier

I wasn't trying to say they were equivalent... but all right, I see your point. 4 straight hours of judging is relatively tough, even if it was two 2 hour stretches with a short break in the middle....

Re: Grade One Qualifier

All this talk about how it's not fair... I think a more important question is why does the G1 qualifier even exist at all? In all the other grades, it's about having too many bands (60 or more in G4A...

Re: Yet another "Name These Tunes" (with MP3s)

Hector the Hero was composed by James Scott Skinner. It was originally written in 1903, so it is in the public domain. There is a readable image of the original manuscript at the University of...

Here's my perspective as a piper in the G4 band, in case is helps anyone understand...

Duns is one reference point: They competed at both pre-World's contests that we attended. At North Berwick,...

Re: "Agogic Stress" vs. "Metric Stress"

Andrew,

I typically use these terms in the following way:
In the narrow sense, agogic stress refers to the emphasis of any particular beat by lengthing it's duration relative to surrounding...

Re: UPI Puts 78th Frasers In 3rd Place

The kindest interpretation is that they confused the MSR with the overall contest... the results they list are for the MSR only, where Scottish Lion 78th Fraser did indeed place 3rd, and Scottish...

Re: Best way to write out a "Snap"

Richard's code meant the following:

B doubling 16th
E grace to a dotted low G 8th, tied to a low G 8th

I agree with Blair, that Charlie's version is clearer and easier to understand....

I just came back to this topic after a couple of months... well Chris is right. I don't know why I said Susan MacLeod had 6 parts. Maybe because there is so much cool stuff going on, that it seems...

Re: birls birls birls and more birls

Since we are talking about birls, I'd like to ask for advice on how to play a birl from a cut C. There are a whole mess of them in Pretty Marion, and I can't figure it out. I've even looked at the...

Re: Name that Jig

The linked MIDI file is a double jig (6/8), which matches how this traditional tune is typically played.

Re: airline friendly pipe case

I use a Zero Halliburton ZR21 Zeroller case. It's 9" x 13" x 21", although I would say that the end with the wheels is really 13.5" x 21.5". It's meant to be carry-on luggage, so it meets the size...

Re: $350 for a gig - because I hate them.

I agree with AAA. Bruce was only complaining about hack pipers playing in public and gave some suggestions on how to improve that situation. He never said anything about "accomplishment" being the...

Over time, my pipe corp had become increasingly lazy about drones noises before the strike-in. At one practice the PM had enough of it and was giving us the business about cleaning it up. Finally one...

Re: Competition tune selection & repetition

A lot of folks (I'm one of them) think that Susan MacLeod is just about the most awesome strathspey there is.

I just heard the Prince Charles G3 band compete with it last weekend. Most G3 bands...

Re: Queen Mary 2007

It turns out that it didn't rain this year. It seriously theatened to on Sunday afternoon, dropping 20 degrees in a couple of hours, but never quite let loose with the H2O.
