Re: Ebay custom Edenbourl bagpipes

I've had students come through over the years from other teachers who sold them a regular length McCallum plastic pc for, "Only $200." or apologized for only being able to afford pipes from Pakistan...

Re: Head shakers

Years ago I was playing a wedding that also had a string quartet. After the 'soundcheck' we were talking and one of the violinists asked, "How did you get this gig?"

"The union." I said.

Re: head shakers

I was playing in my local pub and a young woman asked the bartender, "How long is that guy gonna be playing that flute?"

Re: Need opinions on a GHB first set

If you like McCallums then I'll throw my 2 cents in with this-

I think plastic pipes are a great 1st set and a great 2nd set.

They're a great 1st set because they're less expensive,...

Re: Piob High G/A vs High G/A in Piobaireachd competition

I've found the change in tuning between little music high G and piob. high G to be pretty variable. Sometimes sharper, sometimes flatter, sometimes the same. Piob. high G can also be pretty...

Re: Busking on Pipes

Wicked Tinkers started out by busking in Santa Monica on the 3rd Street Promenade. There are street performers all over and it was often difficult to find a spot. We were sometimes shooed away by...

How many bands/pipers in the USA?

I believe someone's already answered this question (as much as it can be) but I'm having no luck searching for the thread. Anyone? Bueller?

Re: Why does a piper play a gig like this?

I should also mention that my band was recruited to audition for a major US game show. Promo clips of us standing in line (which we never actually did) and playing "impromptu" bits with other...

Re: Why does a piper play a gig like this?

Of course. Editors work wonders, "unscripted" moments are pre-planned, outcomes may be predetermined, all that and more. I've been involved several times in these shows but that doesn't change the...

Re: Why does a piper play a gig like this?

This is an extremely on-going issue. Joseph MacDonald wrote about it in 1760. There are a number of issues-

1. I know several good players who aren't interested in playing gigs for a variety...

Re: Question: Correct Fingering For High-A Grace Notes

Just like you don't play a 'real' high G when playing a high G gracenote from B to Low A (for example) you don't involve your ring finger when playing a high A gracenote here.

Re: Amateur Contests on West Coast

Vista (north San Diego county) is in fairly easy striking distance. Late June. Vegas has been good in the past though I haven't been there for a few years. Phoenix (early May) and Flagstaff (mid...

Re: Kinnaird Evolution Reeds - Troubleshooting a Hissing Tenor

I just struggled with getting the tape around the grub screw. It took a bit of futzing but eventually worked.

Re: Kinnaird Evolution Reeds - Troubleshooting a Hissing Tenor

I have used teflon tape on them before. Tricky but (eventually) workable.

Re: Famous historical people who played pipes

Peter MacNicol (Ally McBeal, Sophie's Choice, Ghostbusters 2, etc.) is a rather good player.

Re: Check out these bagpipes

I have the blue Tinker Pipes set and they're a lot of fun. I have them set up in A440 and often use them when we play with rock bands in a mash up at the end of the day. The percussion pipes were...

Re: Canmore Hybrid bags

All the Canmore bags I use (three sets of pipes) position the blowpipe exactly where I want it with no special set-up. I just push the stock into the groove and play. YMMV

Re: Canmore Hybrid bags

The current iteration of the Canmore hybrid bag is excellent. Very well made, comfortable, durable, breathable, can't recommend highly enough.

Re: Drone Tuning Trouble

If your chanter is happy around Bb you might consider getting a set of Bb drone reeds. There are several makers that provide reeds made to play that low.
