Re: Ready for 1st Band Performance???

"Hoping my military days many years ago makes the transition to marching somewhat easier. "

That's what I thought, too. 22 years Army, marching should be a snap, right? Um, not quite. Bands march...

Re: Cold weather playing

One of my instructors accepted a gig for a wedding. It was to be held at a ski resort at Mammoth Mountain, CA. He got there, tuned up and then was told, no, not in the Lodge, at the cafe at the top...

Re: Ready for 1st Band Performance???

Just remember, if you plug the chanter and are only playing drones, your cutoff times aren't gonna be the same. Your drones will linger on as you try frantically to stop the damn things from hooting,...

My brother. He has a set of silver and ivory pipes he bought from a piper back in the 70's, because he liked the guys kilt... I don't know the maker. He doesn't play, doesn't want to play, doesn't...

Re: Transition to the Worlds

Agree with what was said about moisture control and humidity. Our band competed last year, and we got there about 10 days prior to the Worlds. We also competed at North Berwick and Bridge of Allan,...

Re: International travel with Technopipes

Only time I ever had a problem was right after 911. Had them in the pipe case with my GHBs, shuttle pipes, and a couple of practice chanters. Too many tubes and too much wire for the screeners to...

Re: Where to Look, and When for a "good deal"

The pipes were confiscated from the buyer, and returned to the bandmember. As the buyer worked for the pawnshop in question, I'm sure they worked something out between themselves...

Re: Where to Look, and When for a "good deal"

Watch out for pawn shops, though. One of my instructors had a student show up for a lesson with a set he'd gotten from a pawn shop. Turns out the pipes had been stolen from the car of a bandmember,...

Re: Comfortable Formal Marching Shoes

I found a pair of Dr Scholls women's work shoes at Walmart. They're black and take a shine well. Only $25.00, and they've lasted me several years, and look like they'll last a good many more. Very...

Re: Large mouthpiece protector

I saw the Reed Wrangler years ago, and liked the idea of it. However, the price was too steep for my limited budget. So I improvised. I took an Airstream mouthpiece with a mouthpiece protector,...

Re: Grrrr. Pipe failure at memorial service!

My first funeral, cemetery was about 80 miles away. Got there early, set up, played for a bit before the mourners got there, not too much cause I didn't want tuning issues. Pipes were working...

Re: Grrrr. Pipe failure at memorial service!

Happened to me about a week before a band competition. Snapped between the mouthpiece and the blowstick. No worries, I have a back up. Yeah, right. Needed a new flapper valve. Went to put it...

Re: Shipping a chanter you’ve sold

And forget Duct Tape. It doesn't stay on the packages worth a darn. Use clear shipping tape. Cheaper, and does a good job. The triangular shipping tubes and bubble wrap are your best bet. They're...

Re: McCallum Bagpipes

Several years ago, I found a crack in my outside tenor drone. I'd had the pipes for a couple of years, but they sent me a new drone, some T-Shirts, and a pair of ball caps. Can't beat their service!

Re: Practice chanter playing

I carry my PC with me in the car. It's amazing how much practicing you can do at red lights. Especially that 5 note tricky bit that you're having trouble with, that drives everybody else crazy when...

Re: Gift pipes - what would YOU do?

Remember when you were a crackerjack young piper, and somebody gave you a beautiful set of pipes, and return the favor.

Re: Left-handed Pipers?

My set up is right handed, (drones on left shoulder) just my hands are reversed. Biggest problem is that as I'm a short, round, female-type person, it can be hard to reach the bottom of the chanter,...

Re: Left-handed Pipers?

I said flute, cause that was what we called them. It actually was one of those black plastic recorder-looking things. Like you play in the second grade....

Re: Left-handed Pipers?

I play right hand on top, left on bottom. Been doing it for about 13 years now. In elementary school, I played flute with right hand above, and it just carried over. I did try to change hands, but it...

Re: Kilt making kit?

The store where you buy something that has a VAT attached is supposed to give you a form to turn in at the airport. The airport doesn't have the forms. We found that out as we were leaving. I did...
