Yep...smooth(ness) in a bore is important and a relative term...from eggshell smooth to polished glass....but introduce a crease or peak and valley from tapping is asking for trouble.

Fwiw...Having the reed shoulder abutting the wood of the tenon can cause a dulling of the harmonic vibrations of the reed. Best to keep it ...at least a small distance clear ..1/16” or more as might...

Way back i used modeling clay ( iirc) to form a same taper plug in the poly pipes drone seat....then used ca 200 grit wet/dri paper with it to swirl aournd in the seat to remove the gloss and create...

Sounds like not having hemped enough to snug fill the tapered void between the reed tenon and the seat wall to avoid wiggling. It will wiggle ..if you give it wiggle room.

My rule of thumb is the wood is like a bone dry sink sponge ...but put just a few drops of water on it and they will spread thruout thw whole by capillary action slowy over time.
I use mont blanc...

The original mk1 had round holes.

The efficiency setting ( bridle position) will allow each drone reed to be ‘pressurized’ up to the h2o strength of the warmed up chanter reed...or shut off when reaching it if the tongue is too...

I’ve often had beginners play and win with two well played 2 part tunes on the reality that a one part tune has much of the same thrust throughout ( e.g. common ending 4x) plus other same noted...

Is the stock clean ..no cracks, Assuming no valves to consider. If they been played a whole lot..the bridle might possible be fatigued. A small O ring wight clear it up....try a fat walled one...
