Re: Tenor Drone all of a sudden won't tune

It's worked for some old as Moses sets of Eezydrones that were going to go into the trash anyway. I usually get a couple of O rings in each size for one reed, and put them on the reed side-by-side to...

Re: Bottom Zipper vs Side Zipper

The point of the bottom zipper is for players for whom the side zipper was pressing against their arms and being uncomfortable. As for price difference, I would speculate putting a zipper where there...

Re: Tenor Drone all of a sudden won't tune

More to the point of the original post, and not to make prescriptions for ailments we are assuming this person has, here's how to check the different pieces to figure out what is happening here.

Re: Stocks in Canmore Bag

Even just a few wrap-arounds (done tidily) around the top edge of the grommet and the stock will provide the peace of mind that you are looking for. I am betting that you have electrical tape around...

Re: McCallum vs. Dunbar Drone Reeds

Larger bushing sizes are one of the ways that modern makers edge their bore designs to higher pitches, but there is also a lot to be said that modern makers are often considering a very different...

Re: Air management, drones, and climate

One of the things that I have noticed is that as drones get further out on the pins, they are more likely to shut off.

I suspect that it's an issue of the tongue length being proportionally...

Re: How to deal with Flat Cs

Because it's with different chanters and reeds, I would check the stocks and bag side of the pipes too. Too much moisture, and maybe a weird moisture set up are some things to look out for. The other...

Re: Bass drones: world's observation.

Pipe Major Parkes MBE is playing a Kinnaird evolution as of 2015, but I don't know about now.

Most of good bass tone is accurate tuning. Because its the lowest frequency in the band (usually...

Re: Name that hornpipe

I literally saw the sheet music for this on facebook a few days ago, so I will see what I can scrounge up. At the very least, there is hope.

Re: The Rose

St Laurence O Toole played it in 2010

You might be able to transcribe it with Low A as the tonic like they played it, or with D as the tune's tonic like...

Re: What the Masters are playing

Stuart has been working on a new mccallum chanter recently, so he may have been playing that. Or, he may have been playing the Henderson he's played for a handful of years now.

Anthony MacDonald (Highland) Drone Reeds

Anybody have any idea where I might find a set of the drone reeds that Anthony MacDonald used to make?

Re: Sinclair vs Shepherd

If you are experienced with Sinclair chanters, and know what works well and what works for you more importantly, what I would do is order a sinclair and in the meantime switch drone reeds back and...

Re: What *interesting* drone reed *combos* work well in your pipes (and why)?

I use a full set of standard Cannings in my 2013 Inveran pipes, but I use a pair of Kinnaird Evo tenors and an Xtreme bass in my 2016 Terrys.

I like the Cannings in the Inverans because the tenors...

Re: Best drone reed?

He played Lawries, but the point stands.

If you can get the bass tuning high on the middle pin or get away with lower on the higher pin, it smoothes out the soundand makes the bass a little less...

Re: Your Experience with Acetyl (Plastic) Highland Bagpipes

To answer your question about chanter and sun orientation, yes. Especially in Grade 1, where so many things are magnified deciding factors. It may not be a deciding factor in Grade 4 or 5, or even 3...

Re: Silica gel, when to "recharge?"

Andrew Douglas has a really interesting video about this, because he mentions that a lot of pipers don't really use the moisture control in their pipes.

At one point, he says that most people...

My first guess would be blowing, like you said. The other thing is something that gets thrown around on the forum more often than I think it ought to, but your drone reeds might not be set up all the...

Re: Naill Drones in the Low 470s?

My thoughts here are still, I would either sharpen the chanter pitch to at least 475, or try MG carbon reeds, which have quite a bit of pitch movement inherent in their design. Eezydrone reeds sound...

Re: Naill Drones in the Low 470s?

Maybe a bit of a different way to work around the problem, have you considered sharpening your pitch a bit on the chanter end?
I know some pipers are adamant about lower pitch being better, but if I...

Re: Grade 1 versus Open piping

As an open player for the past 3 years, I can probably provide some insight here.
1) The margin of error in open is negligible compared to grade 1. Technical perfection is expected, tonal mastery is...

Re: Help with setup?

For the pipes, a synthetic bag is probably going to last the longest with the least maintenance- I have heard the new gen Canmore bags are good and substantial under the arm.

For the drone...

I can only offer my perspective, but if waxed hemp was/is good enough for the past 20 years + of Glenfiddich winners, then it's good enough for me.

Messing with the bass top height can also change which harmonics get special prominence, especially noticeable while trying to tune a chanter's B
