Re: Zoom H2n Settings

I have an OG Zoom H2. It makes good recordings, but I haven't used it in a long time.

According to my memory, what you want to do is set it to a basic stereo setting and then put it into record...

Re: "Wrongly" arranged and misprinted tunes

A few years ago my instructor became an EUSPBA judge. Part of the piobaireached certification, iirc, involved learning the misprints. The idea being that a judge should not penalize a competitor for...

Re: Smallpipe Drone Tuning

Not a direct answer to your question, but if you tune your drones to the harmonic series (example: a e A), and if you have it perfectly tuned and balanced, it will trick the brain into believing it...

Re: Reed recommendations for a Colin Kyo chanter

I'd send Murray an email and see what he says. Probably no one knows his chanter as well as he does, right?

Re: Harmonic support for chanter notes

Higher pitch, not higher on the pin. So assume the tenor is tuned at the hemp. If you raise the pitch (perhaps feed the drone from a tone generator) the tone will get less rich. For any given set of...

Re: Harmonic support for chanter notes

It's important to keep in mind that the drones are only one side of the equation. There is a pronounced harmonic series in the chanter too and it will interact with the harmonics in the drones.

Re: Older MCC2 chanter playing flat?

Mine too. Mine plays at normal 474 to 478 pitches but the high G is terrible in the winter.

You could send Willie McCallum an email or FB message. I had a question when I was thinking of buying...

Re: What tune never gets old to you?

I really like Scotland the Brave. If I had to play it 20 times in a row I'd probably be tired of it by the end, but I'd be ready to play it again the next day.

Highland Cathedral I wouldn't mind...

Re: Durable Smallpipes

Without a doubt Duncan Soutar of St. Andrews has the best durable mouth blown SSP I've heard. They're entirely synthetic. The sound is nice. Not as nice as wooden bellows sets, but nicer than any...

My lightest case is a Yamaha sax case that I got at Goodwill for $5.

Re: How big of a pitch range can you get out of your chanters?

Temperature makes a big difference. My band chanter has played in tune down at 466 without ant intervention when itís been cold. A friend who plays in a G1 band in Scotland came for a visit and his...

Re: Reed scraping question.

Maybe it depends on the reed?

If it's just a little too strong, then scrape it with a utility blade and a little dust and try it again.

On the other hand I had some Ross reeds someone gave me...

Re: Solo chanter

I have an McC2 and I love the tone. I have a hard time getting any reed to play in tune (specifically a wicked sharp high G) under certain weather conditions. I'm sure it's user problem, not a...

Wearing of the Green setting

I have seen two settings for Wearing of the Green. Which is more "correct"?

Bar 2

Re: Miking Setup for Tuning

Yes, just get a 1/4 TS to XLR cable and you can plug an SM 57 into a tuner. No preamp necessary. If itís just for tuning a $30 57 clone is fine.

For iOS devices, the Shure MV88 is awesome. Kind...

Radical reed shaving

I had a Ross reed that someone gave me. It was so hard that I couldnít make it sound no matter how hard I blew. So it must have been more than 40Ē of water.

Having nothing to lose, I took a knife...

Re: Carbony Highland Whistle Review - a whistle with highland bagpipe fingering!

Rob is a great fellow. I have three of his standard fingering whistles: low d, high d, and mezzo g. I bought one of his mezzo g whistles probably 10 years ago. Last year he gave me 100% trade credit...

Perhaps your memory is shorter than mine.

I've never disputed your experience.

But if you review all the threads about the pro's and con's of all the chanters out there you'll see that few...

Re: Hole-spacing whistle vs. GHB

I've probably played 3,000 hours on GHB (i.e., not counting PC). I suffer no drop in clarity of execution with any GHB chanter based on hole spacing. I never have. To me they're all equally...

Re: Hole-spacing whistle vs. GHB

I play anything that works on whistles, and every whistle is different, which has led me to learn all sorts of fingerings. I probably don't play a heavy strike on whistle because it doesn't really...

I have the original technopipes and I really like them. The new improvements sound like they're probably good, but I guess that's like icing on the cake. Always good to continue to try to improve a...

Re: Drone Volume in Old Recordings

That might be true, but in this particular case the recordings were made by a musicologist. It might be that one of his goals was to make a recording that faithfully reflected (as much as was...
