Re: Pleasanton weather?

So very true, Andrew! Even though I believe our band is playing better than we did in the '80s and '90s, the trajectory in playing in this grade and others is stunning!

Re: Breathing cycle

Hi, old_dog (from one to another). There is no cycle, per se. That's a mistake many make, early on. It's on and "as needed" basis; and everyone finds their own balance, based upon many factors. ...

Re: Rubber bands

I agree with you, Blue. It's not difficult to fix; and I've had many a very good and long-lasting reed that had initial F issues.

Re: Back ache from piping

Other than for those with past injuries, I've often wondered if the back pain after playing for awhile could be due to a tiring diaphragm and other muscles coming to play to support the fatigue.

Re: Competition Strathspeys

All good ones. I haven't looked at the RSPBA list of approved tunes, lately; but you might want to check that and see if any are or are not on the list. That might rule out some, if it's important...

Re: Recovery Time

I had four broken ribs in the side and one in the back. They were on the left side (of COURSE!). I was out for about six months; and I could feel the after effects--nothing debilitating,...

Re: Piping Equivs of Mainstream Composers

As a classical music lover myself, what a fun and fascinating discussion! And I agree that Kerwiler's overview was impressive. And Deborah sounds incredibly special. My field is psychology; so...

Re: ground and first variation competition question

Hey, Ralph. BCPA rules/music guidelines just indicate "ground and next variation" for Grade 4. You would not be subject to dismissal if you play just those. However, I suggest that you e-mail or...

Re: Tuning Problems

That just reminds me too much of the joke (or was it?) of the piper who had his instructor tune the drones, then super glued them in place on the assumption that he would never have to tune again!...

Re: A long-overdue return to competing

Thanks, Nate, for your post and story. I think that it might strike a chord with a number of people, particularly in how the early experiences can either encourage or discourage us; motivate and...

Re: Small or Medium Pipe Bag

Yes; I've done this with young students until they "grow into" a larger bag. It's less easily done with some of the newer bags (the ones I did were old, but sound, L&M bags where the seam could roll...

Re: First solo competition

Good on you, Linz! :thumb: I hear so many who fail to start, as though it's too late (and as you said, one's never too old). Or they say, "I wish I'd started when I was younger." Well, if my math...

Re: MacLellan Bagpipes new design

It's interesting the spectrum of weight in ABW pipes, obviously with the variable of mounting material factored in. Yet even factoring in the variable, there seems to be a distinct difference. My...

Re: Moisture Control

The Piper's Pal cap (with the accompanying rod) has worked out very well, and I've recommended that all my band members use it. When used properly, it keeps the chanter reed with just the right...

Re: Playing by the sea

I agree with those above that you'll likely be fine. ABW tolerates change fairly well; but no so much RAPID change.

Re: Difficulty finding instructors. Looking to learn

It's nice that it's your mother's wish. But what is yours? I ask that question of any student, no matter the age (yet definitely of the junior-aged students, knowing that many are thrown in due to...

Lovely! Sounds a lot like my pipes when I play in a wine cellar. :) Seriously, nice sound.

Re: Learning tunes for jobs - limits?

Sound comments and suggestions, above. One thing I find interesting is how many request tunes with "wedding" in the title. Why? Just because it has "wedding?"...especially when they wouldn't...

Re: Length of the Blowstick (no joke...)

I believe that there are other variables involved, too. The type and size of bag will have some impact on the blowpipe length; how the instrument is held (e.g., tucked up nicely); posture; etc.

Re: Charity pipes

Perhaps you're connected to one of the bands in your locale. If not, would contacting them be an option? Some bands have spare sets and/or members who have multiple sets or are not playing much.

Re: Sandy St. James (1933-2017)

I am so very sorry to hear this; and I appreciate your posting the information. As with so many, I had a long association with Sandy; and like many, that meant long phone calls! :)

Short story:...

Re: Pipers/Drummers playing other instruments?

Your mentioning being a music major and orchestra instruments, I still remember my very orchestra-oriented viola instructor's eyes going wide when I mentioned a 3/4 march. That concept was totally...

Re: BCPA Rule Changes & Questions

Thanks, Steve, for the kind and encouraging words. And when I said, "Fair enough," I think it was more meant to be "So be it!" Yes, the times have changed; and there's little to no room in most of...

Re: BCPA Rule Changes & Questions

I've played with, and been an instructor in, so-called competition bands. Or, as you put it, "competition band firstly...and performance band secondly." It's a lot of work; and can be very...

Re: Pipers/Drummers playing other instruments?

Bagpipes - Competent.
Viola - Sort of suck, but I did play with a community orchestra.
Fiddle - Suck.
Piano - Really suck, but working to improve.
Guitar - It's been awhile, and I no longer have...
