Re: Opinion on '90s(?) Hardies?

I have an extensive set of gun drils ranging from .3025-.375 in very small increments. A lot of the narrow pieces of wood also have flaws in the bore. I generally will start out by taking them to...

Re: Opinion on '90s(?) Hardies?

I just opened up the bass bottom section for a friend. The bore was .29" and they were apparently difficult if not impossible to tune. I have a video of the process - it took about 10 minutes to do...

Re: Drone stock dimensions - does it really matter?

 There you go again taking us off track.

Pipes do matter. Stop saying that only changing the reed is relevant.

Pipemakers aren't all going to go out and start making their own reeds. ...

Re: Drone stock dimensions - does it really matter?

Patrick, I'm not going to get into any of this tit for tat nonsense with you. You questioned by more makers don't make their own reeds. I offered a response. A decent set of reeds in a decent set...

Re: The Illusion of Drone Locking

Congratulations. I'm not an open grade piper, but congrats if you are. I just make bagpipes and play a little.

Re: Drone stock dimensions - does it really matter?

Because with any decent set of pipes, any decent piper can get a more than decent sound out of the setup. It is a waste of time to put R&D and production costs into something which yields so trivial...

Re: The Illusion of Drone Locking

Well I'll tell you how I know. It was a couple of gold medalists who told me the method - maybe voodoo, maybe not. It doesn't mean the pipes are out of tune simply that what beginners like you and...

Re: The Illusion of Drone Locking

My statement was not that drones are out but rather that the initial point where we cease to discern the intonation waves - as Patrick wrote earlier that we listen for the most dominant lower notes...

Thanks! I just had dinner with the Baron of Bannockburn and will have this now on hand when he comes over to the house next month.

Re: The Illusion of Drone Locking

I think the smoothness of the bore is a totally different question. As Keith noted earlier, a tapered bore will have an effect on the sound but it is not the whole story behind mode locking.

I...

Re: The Illusion of Drone Locking

Mode locking and the modifications were not directly related. He noted that some pipes could mode lock without modification but others did not. It led to to look at the various other aspects to...

Re: Plastic vs. Wood

The first one is more "breathy" and the second is more substantive. I like the first one - but as the OP will note, lots of things in bagpipes are personal preference.

Re: Why bagpipes are sad - Explained!

Great process but the yellowish color goes well with the yellow sap wood in the cocus.

Re: Old chanters and modern reeds

I have a Glen chanter which was part of a set boxed up in 1948 and not touched until I bought them in 2013. The cane from the reeds had turned to dust but the staples were intact and were quite a...

I have two sets of Glens from 1875 and 1880 respectively. One with Elephant ivory and the other with marine ivory. Both are darkened to a strong orange. This image below is from my pipes and is...

Re: cleaning stained ivory

One up vote for el gaitero. I've cleaned a few sets of pipes that way. Amazing and no scrubbing.

Re: Can tone improve with age?

I think the ultimate test here for any ardent follower of the science and fact of it is to buy a lathe and make a set, or buy a few sets of vintage pipes and ream them out. Pure observation and...

Re: Finishing African Blackwood

Teak oil makes a nice finish as well. Easy to apply and doesn't gum as easily if you apply it while the piece is spinning on the lathe.

Re: Can tone improve with age?

I still use a gouge to shape all the bells by hand on my pipes. :woot:

As to the original question, one might consider the target audience. How each of us perceive tone - not our preferences...

Re: How is the counterbore created?

I just drill two holes all the way through using a pair of pilot holes at the end. One larger bit about 1/2 cm in and then a followup narrower bit using the center point as the matching center.

Re: Grants or scholarships for free pipes?

I believe that if a piper can get a partial bagpipe scholarship to Lyon College, they will be issued a set of pipes that they have the option to buy when they graduate.
