Re: Airstream TILT Expandable or FlexiStick TILT expandableBlowpipe

Both my sets have the blowpipes (ordinary straight ones) tied in so that they stay in place if I move my mouth away from them.

Why would a piper have it any other way? You're asking for trouble. ...

Re: Why the bidding on these pipes?

As a matter of fact, subjecting that Pakistani set to a good crushing would do the piping world good.

Re: Harmonic support for chanter notes

For sure my old Starcks, whose tenors have so far defied playing at modern pitch, sound amazing at 466, with all sorts of rich harmonics.

Re: Why the bidding on these pipes?

OMG there was a newbie here, a promising kid, but getting horrible instruction (incorrect fingerings etc) who got a sh!te Pakistani set and spent quite a bit of money and time trying to turn it into...

Re: Proper head gear?

I just Googled Glen-airy, I didn't get any hits.

There is a street in Los Angeles named Glen Airy.

And a FaceBook gift shop named Glen Airy.

Re: Proper head gear?

And they put visors on them for a while.

If only Glengarries all came with visors.

Here, the 79th Highlanders at Waterloo with their visored feather bonnets.

Re: Proper head gear?

Yes the pipe band I played in decided to forgo hats for a few years, at around that same time.

Not only was it a time of Big Hair, also we had several women in the band.

Remember when female...

Re: The WARBL MIDI Controller - very realistic uilleann pipe sound and fingering!

Thanks!

If I were programming "realistic" electronic uilleann pipe I would take pressure readings from the pipes of a half-dozen different good uilleann pipers (ones who started on the uilleann...

Re: Pipe Band Tuning

I think most bands do

Scenario #3: PM sets your chanter at practice and yells "don't f**k with it!"

If you want to play at home in a different tuning or a different sound, buy yourself a...

Re: Proper head gear?

Taking the long view, the fact is that the way civilian pipers has changed over the decades. Pipers' dress is a "fashion culture" one could say.

For a very long time, from when civilian pipe...

Re: Harmonic support for chanter notes

Some interesting observations, thanks!

I had wondered how much of the harmonics were coming from the tenors.

For sure the tone with two tenors is always more complex and supportive than with...

Why the bidding on these pipes?

I just don't understand it.

On Ebay every day are nice vintage pipes, African Blackwood, by good makers, that go unsold.

Then a patently Pakistani pipe shows up and people are bidding it up. ...

Re: The WARBL MIDI Controller - very realistic uilleann pipe sound and fingering!

Your video prompts two questions, each with an observation attached:

1) Does pressure on the arm controls the octaves?
Is it set up in such a way that there's one pressure (or lack of pressure)...

Re: Kilgour Edinburgh pipes

Wow.

Many years ago my old PM said "hop in my car! I'm going to show you something you won't believe!"

We eventually arrived at a band's practice hall. There were newbies getting instruction...

Re: Kilgour Edinburgh pipes

I'm guessing it's because Robert Kilgour moved there in 1979, from what I read.

As a prominent piper he would probably have had an impact on the local piping scene, perhaps gaining a number of...

Beautiful pipes! So cool you're keeping his legacy alive.

One question though, if you notice your great-grandfather is standing with perfect upright posture, and I'm sure he played that way too....

Re: Harmonic support for chanter notes

The 7th harmonic is 31 cents flat of an Equal Temperament minor 7th, it's exactly where most pipers haver their G's tuned.

Re: Harmonic support for chanter notes

Thanks for the link!

That's what I wonder, is if we took a set of drones that gives superb support for F, and another set of drones that had little support for F, what would these look like?...

Harmonic support for chanter notes

I just now went back over old threads with "support" "harmonic" or "harmonics" in the titles and didn't see a thread that quite touched on this topic the way I'm thinking about it recently.

I...

Re: Kilgour Edinburgh pipes

The mounts on the Ebay set are interesting.

I've seen photos of Kilgour pipes that have the same huge fat rounded mounts as Robertsons.

But this set has more normal-looking mounts, rather on...

That's right, I've read that the firm set up by the Kilgour brothers was called "Kilgour of Strathspey" though I believe they were in Edinburgh.

Re: Irish session tunes on SSP

You're welcome. I did the survey more as a statistical thing rather than a repertoire list.

There's a site thesession.org that's all about ITM session playing.

They have tens of thousands of...
