Re: Chanter tuning struggle, the high notes

I play a Shepherd ABW and really like it. After playing various others (Naill, Medallist, McC2), I borrowed my teacher’s Shepherd for an entire competition season. He’d added a heavy silver sole...

Re: 1950's Robertsons

The bass may be fine with the right combo of tenor reeds.

Re: 1950's Robertsons

Patrick,

I swapped out my Rocket cf bass for Kinnaird Evo bass and “yes” the buzz is from the bass not the tenors. It was a crude trial as I haven’t tweaked the bass to fully match the tenors yet....

Re: 1950's Robertsons

Patrick,

Thanks. Funny though..... your Ezee tenors sound a little buzzer than mine, but that could be the recording method.

I’ll have to get a quick recording of mine to compare.

Re: 1950's Robertsons

Patrick,

Please grab a recording of Ezee tenors and Kinnaird bass if you can. It’d be good to see how other folk feel about that combo.

Need advice to help with a decision on GHB

I just wrote a long reply, then saw the OP’s update. Deleted the redundant advice.

Re: 1950's Robertsons

Well I plugged my glass fiber rockets into my Robertson tenors. So, I’d say:

1. Ackland
2. Rockets
3. Kinnaird

I have tried Ackland’s in my Robertsons. They’re bold and buzzy’ish. However,...

Re: Chanter tuning struggle, the high notes

Maria,

I assume you’re referring to the pipe chanter rather than practice chanter.

There are a number of good apps that’ll help with pipe chanter tuning. I use one called Braw tuner. I have it...

Re: Why are some better than others ?

I think we only disagree on the extent of genetics over practice, or vice versa.

Re: Why are some better than others ?

Maybe a large component is down to practice, but at the top tiers, sometimes the little extras really count.

Either way, I firmly believe that genetics plays an important part in musical ability -...

Re: Why are some better than others ?

CallumII,

Environment has a huge impact too, sorry if my post seemed to underplay that.

Anyway, a specific example of genetics possibly impacting piping ability is the independence of movement...

Re: Why are some better than others ?

People’s abilities to successfully play bagpipes also simply boil down to natural variation in humans.

Think about this:

1. Unless, we’re identical twins, we’re genetically unique. This is...

Re: Do you swap your drones? (Poll)

They’re originals from the 1930’s. I told myself that when I made it to gr3, I’d treat myself. They were a consignment set sold via Island Bagpipes.

I think Ringo Bowen has pictures of them as...

Do you swap your drones? (Poll)

I swapped my McCallum drones for some Robertson drones.

As for swabbing, I only swab my drones after a long playing session when it is humid or cold. Otherwise, I let them air dry.

Bear-in-mind...

Re: Electronic Tone Trainer

I have this device and it works fairly well. It’d be even better coupled to a pitch detector so you can see the direct effect of pressure and pitch.

Re: Tape for drone reed tongues

I thought everyone had a small balance for their record player stylus weight?

Re: Tape for drone reed tongues

If you cut really small bits of tape such as tunetape, you can get it to work. Try sizes such as 3mm sq. It doesn’t take much weight to effect the pitch.

Re: Soliciting input on drone sounds

The tenors in the first recording sounded more buzzy to me. I listened using my iPad. It seemed like the chanter/drone balance was impacted in the first recording because of this, although in...

Re: 2020 setup?

My setup hasn’t changed, although I have tried some other reed combos. I still come back to:

Drones - Robertson
Drone reeds - Ezee tenors, Rocket bass
Chanter - Shepherd ABW
Chanter reed -...

Re: Constructive Criticism for Pipers

They did bring the visible CPL’s back. As I heard it, some competitors (not sure if band or solo) got stroppy about their CPL and gave judges flack. If this is the case, then I understand why they...

Re: Constructive Criticism for Pipers

In WUSPBA the CPL’s are made available to the competitor. I really like judge feedback followed by a indication on where in the grade my performance fits. It means that you’re competing “against” the...

I have found the critiques posted on my playing to be extremely useful.

Maybe I have just got to the point in my learning in which I can accept experienced pipers’ viewpoints on my playing without...

I think it’s a great resource, and friendly. I posted my second tune a couple of days’ ago and am looking forward to comments/suggestions.

I wholeheartedly encourage its use.

Re: Piping and COVID

I think what the OP is suggesting is that given the extra work placed on the pulmonary system through piping, that pipers may be less susceptible to side effects of Coronavirus.

This seems...

It was only a matter of time. When I decided not to enter the Friday piob competition, we called the owners of the cabin we’d booked. They sounded concerned, but quickly realized that only wanted to...
