Re: Changing birl style

Second update: Iím getting good birls on the PC now, too. Mostly using the down-up sweep, but practice the up-down sweep just to have that in my wheelhouse if needed. Iím getting the down-up with...

Re: Practice Chanter Reed Moisture Help and an Introduction

You might want to get a pack of pipe cleaners (real ones used for smoking pipes, not the polyester ones used for kidsí crafts) and use one from the staple end of the reed every now and then to really...

Re: Bass reeds and tuning

I think it has to do with the lower density. Think about He - a very low density gas that makes sound very sharp.

Re: Selecting Band Tunes

G3 band. We switch out one competition set (medley and MSR) each season, so we only have one new set to learn at a time.

As for tune selection, there are a handful of us who find tunes and share...

Re: Tunes you absolutely HATE!

I donít know if there are any specific tunes that I hate, but I can say that I hate sets of one tune in multiple idioms.

The other day on Spotify, it was Caber Feidh as an MSRJ.

Re: Changing birl style

OP UPDATE: So I had the time to play my actual pipes for the first time in a long time earlier today. Tried the double sweep (both ways) and managed to get some cleanish birls. Canít get a good birl...

Re: Changing birl style

I like the rubber band idea. Every time I try something with a sweeping motion, I expose the B hole a bit.

To be able to keep up at rehearsals (via Zoom) Iíve just been using the double tap, but...

Re: Solo Chanter For New MacRae Pipes

If you have smallish hands, the Colin Kyo or Gandy chanters both have very comfortable (and similar) hole spacing. I play a Kyo laminate for solos and a Gandy poly for band and they both have a...

Re: Fondly remembered gigs?

When I was a senior in high school and about a year into playing, I had my first painting gig. A lady had contacted my school pipe band to hire a piper to pay for her daughterís (who lived bagpipes)...

Changing birl style

After 17 years of doing the tap-drag birl, my pinkie is starting to lock up on me, stopping me from doing the drag part. Think Iíll have to switch to the down-up birl.

Has anyone else had to...

Re: Groped by women when performing?

Iím surprised how many people are okay with this happening to them or the idea of it happening.

Iím fortunate enough to never have been groped or upkilted, but if I were, the offender would most...

My understanding is that in North America, any ANAPBA association will recognise the level and placement of another member association.

Re: A warm up routine that I think can really improve technique

I like it.

I tried doing it a bit more like how percussionists do paradiddle exercises - 2x at regular tempo, 4x at 2x tempo, 8x at 4x tempo, 4x at 2x tempo, 2x at regular tempo. Itís a bit of a...

Re: Highland goose to start?

Thatís what I did and thought that was just the way it was done

Getting the physical coordination of blowing/squeezing with the effort of getting the chanter reed to sound is difficult...

Re: Breathing technique...

Definitely get some more hemp on your chanter. Thatís gonna be the biggest issue.

Re: Adjusting drone reeds to chanter strength

Youíll need to move the o-ring bridles to adjust the strength of the reed. Toward the plug end to make easier, toward the drone end to make harder.

Re: Left handed student

Watching the top bands at the Worlds, you occasionally see lefties wit the bag under the right arm. Thatís how Iíd do it if he wants to have his right hand on top.

Re: Yet another pipe ID Logan???

Thatís a bit of a head scratcher.

It definitely doesnít look over 100 years old, but the description says the mounts were swapped out and the slides added.

As for the origin of the slides, I...

Re: Dunbar Classic

Looking at Dunbarís website, the Classics are still different internally from the regular Henderson-style sets.

You could always give them a call and find out for sure.
