Re: Piping for Looking for advice: Release of Ashes Ceremony aboard a boat

I have done this. And all I can say is to be VERY mindful of the wind. It can be rather tricky out there. The ashes blew (quickly) back into the crowd on the deck. And a certain piper - mid tune...

Re: Blair tuner (app vs. tuner)

The biggest advantage to me is that if I - or someone else - drop(s) my tuner on the ground, no big deal. If it's my iPhone, bigger deal.

That being said, the winning band at the last 2 Grade 5 contests I was at played three 2-part 4/4 marches (6 parts).

Re: Gibson vs. MacLellan pipes

This is a no brainer: MacLellan! I played a set of Gibsons from 1988 - 2009. Good sound, got a lot of high marks for sound in solos. But the MacLellan's I've been playing for the past 1.5 years...

Re: Novice 6/8 Marches

I did very well with "Bonnie McAlpine" from Scots Guards book 1 (I think) when I competed in grade 4. Judges seemed impressed with tune selection - I guess it's not one they hear very often. Also...

Re: New Eagle Scout

I've played at 2 of them, one a pay job & one for my Godson, which was a real honor for me.

Sorry your sons aren't having you play, Dale. Buy you still have something to be very proud of: not...

Re: Piping Recital in Brooklyn, 2/18

From the web site:
Tickets are $25 at the door--kids under 12 free.

I've never attended this, but have heard it's a blast. Highly recommended!:thumb:

Re: Tune in the intro to the Ren and Stimpy cartoon "Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen"

I know that Ren & Stimpy used library music from Associated Production Music, so I searched their web site & found this:

Library: Sonoton
Track Title: Bale Guilvinec
CD#: SAS 0029, #17

Re: EUSPBA rule change for instructors playing lead

I don't see any advantage to listing such a person as instructor. If they're not listed as instructor, they could then play lead, assuming they're on the roster as a band member. If they were...

Re: EUSPBA the Full Piobaireachd?

Just my 2 cents: I have a feeling that if the full piob. becomes mandatory for grade 4, some games will simply stop offering it as an event.

Re: EUSPBA Massed Band Tunes

Not to be contrary, but the last few EUSPBA games I've been at, Bonnie Dundee & Minstrel Boy were pretty much the ONLY tunes played in massed band.

At Rockland a few weeks ago, the massed band...

Re: Parades-can pipers lead the flag?

This makes sense. But as far as my band goes, usually the outfit with the color guard is sponsoring us in the parade, so out of respect, I offer them the option to go ahead of us. Just Mon., we did...

Re: Bows on Balmorals

Back in the 80's I joined my first pipe band & the balmoral was part of the band uniform. The bit about tying / untying the bow depending on your marital status was one of the first things the...

Re: Sanctioned games round about Pt Pleasant NJ.

There's an Irish Festival in Sea Girt in Sept., which is very close (1 town from Manasquan). I've never been to it, so I don't know much about it. There are a fair amount of pipe bands in Monmouth...

The closest sanctioned games that I know of is Bonnie Brae, which happens to be this Sat., probably about 1.5 hours from Pt. Pleasant.

There are a few Irish Festivals in Monmouth & Ocean...

Re: MacLellan's

I believe that's true, Mike! Unfortunately, the Rocket bass wasn't sounding too good in the pipe that it was made for, so when someone offered me $$$ for it, I took the deal. Now regretting that.
